Boca fans look to be enjoying this madness at the minute. Wonder will they think it's worth it when they're inevitably slammed by the governing bodies.

Don't know why they're taking so long to make a decision. No way the River players can be in the right frame of mind to play. Would have to start the 2nd half with 9 men due to the number of players affected. Ponzio appears to have some sort of rash forming on his back and his face is bright red.

If they can't gaurantee the players safety then it's pointless.

Aye it's silly continuing really, 3 or 4 players look to be affected by it.

Want it to continue for selfish reasons as I want to watch football but why the confederation hasn't called it off is beyond me.

Sergio Berni says he was forced to intervene after the match organisers acted "with imprudence" following the scenes at La Bombonera

Argentina's Ministry of Security secretary Sergio Berni slammed tournament organisers after the suspension of the Copa Libertadores last-16 clash between River Plate and Boca Juniors.

With the second leg of the tie at 0-0 at half-time, the fixture did not get underway after the break, with visiting River players alleged to have been sprayed with a substance which caused irritation at La Bombonera on Thursday .

After more than one hour of deliberations between players and officials, the fixture was suspended - with no decision formalised on whether the remainder of the tie will be completed at a later date, with River 1-0 up on aggregate.

Berni slammed the handling of the situation and admits he was forced to intervene.

"We emptied the stadium, we worked organised. The players stayed on the pitch under my orders, while we were emptying the stadium," Berni said.

"What I did was, with all the uncertainty that was going on, with the irresponsibility from the organisers that were in charge of deciding on the situation, [evacuate the stadium].

"See, you can't make the people stay for 45 minutes with that uncertainty.

"I called them and gave them five minutes to make their mind, to decide because they were acting with imprudence, inexperience and negligently.

"So I gave them five minutes to decide what to do. I took charge of the security, they had to be in charge of the sports matter."

Berni said more stringent security at the gates would not necessarily have avoided the incident that saw a premature finish.

"A frisk is a frisk. If you take two hours in order to check 200 people, can you imagine to check 60,000? It's just a frisk, not a check. Justice should have to investigate, of course," Berni added.

Romer Osuna, from Conmebol, said the delay was due to their hopes for a restart.

"We thought that it might be played again. Inquires would be done today. Tomorrow [Friday] the Conmebol court will gather and decide [if the tie will be completed]," Osuna said.

Toxic spray? Wimps. They should count themselves lucky that it wasn't a open bottle of pish, a nappy full of *, a dead man's ashes or a brick :smiley-laughing002:

If CONMEBOL rules are followed, River will be giving them game. La Bombonera could also be closed for continental games for two years, but that is a long shot.

Edit: The guy in the photo above apparently had a banning order put in place 45 days ago. So a guy with a banning order was able to get into the stadium with a blow touch/flare and toxic gas. Tight security :fear:

And in the grand South American tradition of making things unbearable for the away team, Boca decided to cut off all the water to the River Plate dressing room. So they'd have just been sitting there covered in acid unable to do anything.

The Boca players also come out of this badly. Instead of walking off with the River players to stop them from being attacked again they stand and applaud the Barra Brava while they throw stuff at the River players.

    Glad I fell asleep now.

Racing and Emelec are through. Emelec are the first Ecuadorian team since 2008 to get this far. That time out, LDU Quito won it. Six Emelec fans were then stabbed outside the stadium.

    Bad week.

My *, the early 90s are back! :smiley-laughing002: I thought South America got over those things. I wouldn't bet in Boca getting a harsh punishment, they have a tradition of being looked over by CONMEBOL. Things like this happen in every single playoff game at La Bombonera since I was a baby and they never got not even a slap in the wrist until now. Just for the record, the last Libertadores match to be interrupted because of crowd trouble was precisely Boca X River at La Bombonera in 2008.
