Celtic are set to accelerate a deal to sign Sondre Orjasaeter in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition ofFootball Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Brendan Rodgers wants to sign a left-winger to provide some competition for, and potentially replace, Daizen Maeda

The 27-year-old remains one of Celtic’s most important players and is considered to be one of the first names on the team sheet for the Hoops.

However, Rodgers wants to have backup in that area and is hoping to keep everyone on their toes as the club hopes to be playing in the knockout stages of the Champions League

Maeda has played 29 games for the Hoops this season, scoring 14 and providing six assists as he has made a major impact throughout the campaign.

However, the Japan international also has the potential to play up front, and signing a new player would potentially free up that option.

Orjasaeter is a winger that the Scottish giants are monitoring, with the 21-year-old being seen as someone who has “huge potential” moving forward.

The winger has got 15 goals and 15 assists this season and plays as an inverted winger for Sarpsborg.

The youngster has broken into the Norway Under-21s international setup and is being seen as someone for the future at Celtic, which would provide Maeda with enough competition.

Doesn't have 15 and 15 this season. That's his career numbers.

But anyway. Think this one appears to have a bit of traction...didn't expect them to want that much though. If we paid that then it'd probably mean we ain't getting two wingers. Certainly not in the same bracket anyway. Nae chance we go £15-17m on toure and him.

15 goals and assists? That’s outrageous for someone not in one of the top teams.

looks similar to Jota in the clips I’ve seen.

Suspect we'd meet somewhere in the middle and put in a decent sell-on clause. Probably pretty attractive given the fees some of our attacking players have fetched in recent years.

Think his club only bought him last year for a mill or so so clearly only going one way..

    Hence wanting a high fee..

Would certainly seem this may a moving towards that market again. £6m-£12m. Makes sense.

Easily funded by our euro run so far, and moving dead wood on.

    Hopefully.

In saying that we will get £7m for Selling Bernabei and Palma so there's him paid for immediately. Before touching anything else.

We are rolling in it so two in that bracket shouldn't be outwith our capabilities.

Both Norway and Sweden have been creeping their prices up recently with a few going and being fairly successful.

Sarpsborg though will probably have that number in mind as they ripped off Rennes for a young striker I mentioned the other day called Henrik Meister and got €9m for him which he wasn’t worth. It would likely be a deal worth up to £7m including add ons but it will be one of Toure or this boy and not both I think.

Screams Holm vol 2. Don't see the point tbh. We need a starting-calibre LW to replace Palma. Quality over quantity.

Same league, similar age, plays for a mediocre team, minimal exposure to competitive matches, no senior call-ups for Norway which isn't exactly a powerhouse. In comparison, Ajer started playing for Norway at the age of 20.

I think we should be targeting a starting-calibre player instead of a project. Assuming he's better than Yang, he'll be our 5th wing option. What's the point?

Such a narrow minded way of viewing a player.

Same league and same age so he'll be the same as Holm is silly logic, Holm was, very clearly, a project signing when he first came, nobody doubted that, and he'd have likely done a lot better with us had he actually buckled down, from the few clips I've watched, Orjasaeter looks streets ahead of Holm.

He wouldn't be fifth choice either, Yang and Palma will likely leave over the coming month and Forrest is still out, he'll be third choice right away, and if we want to be pedantic, he's second choice behind both Maeda and Kuhn and would likely fill in when either is missing.

In what world would we be paying £7m with the intention of that player being 5th choice?

    Palma is leaving as well.

I can see the similarities with the league, nationality, and him being a young player, but that's where it ends IMO.

Holm could've worked out, I think he has talent - the biggest issue with him seems to be his attitude and application.

And the international comparison is poor. Norway were really bad for a long time, particularly with defenders. They're still not an elite team, but to compare, their forwards are Bobb (Man City), Haaland (Man City), Nusa (Leipzig), Hauge (Frankfurt), Sorloth (Atleti) and Strand Larsen (Wolves) -- it's a brilliant attack, you would need mental numbers in the Norwegian league to break into that.

£7 million for a guy who was playing in the norwegian 2nd tier till last season? Seems crazy money to me. Btw, the linked article claims he has 15 goals and 15 assists this season. In fact, these are his career numbers. Per transfermakrt, his numbers this season are 6 goals and 7 assists in 32 games.

We're linked with Toure and Jota. If we end up replacing Palma with this guy, I'll be disapointed. Lots of posters claim we need 2 wingers. If he's a replacement for Yang, that's another story. Personally, I'd want us to target a LW who can challenge Maeda from day 1.
