If the plan is to put the ball in knee height to the near post then we are * brilliant

It's we don't have guys who attack a ball.

To score from set pieces with the head you need minimum 2 even better 3 or 4 fearless nutcases who make runs and fly towards the ball.

Doesn't really matter who is taking your corners could be Xavi, Zidane, Ronaldinho and Messi but you're not going to score goals if the guys who attack balls dont exist.

Jullien was the last guy who was exceptional. Jenz, Giakoumakis, Dembele were good.

Welsh is probably our main centre-back who attacks balls at least out of Scales and CCV we've not really seen enough of the others and he's about 5'11.

Ralston is also superb in the air but he never plays and most of the time when he does unless we are desperate he doesn't go forward.

Crying out for a set piece coach for years.
23 corners yesterday and I only Scales header first half being only near miss. Palma hit the side netting a few times.
Its like we have no strategy, just hit and hope for the best.
Think it was the Roma game a few weeks ago, every corner they took was dangerous.
What really * me off is when we take a short corner, * about with the ball and then, before it gets delivered, CCV and Scales are trotting back to their positions and when the ball eventually gets delivered, we are outnumbered big time.
Winning the first ball from a corner is so important, a flick on at near post.
I just cannot understand our coaches looking at our corners, week in week out and not doing something about it.
Thinking back, VVD and Wilson were the last pair that had a good record from corners.

Ronny’s year with Denayer and Van Dijk was good for it as well.

And Boyata on his own was a danger. Bout it innit

I'd settle for less player signings if it meant we got a few coaches, one of them being a set piece coach.

To have so many corners and do so little with them is poor. The short corners rarely come to anything. Palma needs to stops trying to score. He went for the near post a few times last night.

We need to get someone that consistently delivers a good ball into the box.

I still can't get over how Dundee's goalie and defender got away with their efforts on CCV. They were very obviously fouling him consistently.

Id say a keeper can give a we shuv to get by. Having a full glove over his head and face, about removing his eyeballs and nothing? Thats illegal and the huns would have been giving a penalty every single time.

Was thinking about this last night watching MOTD. Villas 2nd goal is from a really we'll worked corner and camara pans to Emery who's looking around to high 5 Austin McPhee.

Given the ridiculous number of corners we get each game it seems totally negligent that we aren't employing a specialist set piece coach

What makes it worse is that it’s not just corners - we’re * at every type of set piece.

Who was the last semi-reliable free kick taker we had?

Griffiths most likely, but a case for Mooy could be made. Palma's highlights do show lots of set pieces TBH, but the set-up of the players at ours is often incorrect.

Even then, Griffiths apparently only scored 7 free kicks for us in 261 games.

Not expecting another Nakamura, but we should always have a player capable of scoring 3 or 4 free kicks a season. Particularly given the number of free kicks we win in good positions.

With direct free kicks - we don't get that many of them. And I don't know how much time Rodgers allows players to practice direct free kicks. Palma was/is supposed to be great at them.

the goal from scales the other day was brilliant in its simplicity. if harry kewell is leaving there should be a spot for a highly regarded set piece coach .its an aspect of our game with the largest scope for improvement

Would love to hear Rodgers opinion on how bad our corners are,i mean just so we can get an understanding of what they are trying to do.

It seems to be a case of just try and beat the first man (which we struggle to do)and see what happens. As for the short corners..the mind boggles their a complete waste.

And is one where marginal games could be the difference not only domestically but in europe too.

Lennon team that reached last 16 must of scored off a set piece nearly every group game that year.

A part of the problem is that footballing idealists tend to overfocus on training ball control, possession and maaaybe movement, and this leaves no room in a training session for set pieces.

At the 10s of thousands they all get a week, and the fact they are home by 3pm (Tierney interview confirmed it) surely they can manage 1 extra hour once or twice a week for set piece work only?
