Rangers won’t face a transfer battle with Celtic if they press ahead with a January move for Scott McKenna.

Reports from down south on Friday claimed the Old Firm rivals are fighting it out for McKenna’s signature as the Scotland international prepared to leave Nottingham Forest before the end of the month. But Record Sport can reveal Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has not placed the name of the former Aberdeen stopper on his list of defensive targets. And that could clear the way for Ibrox counterpart Philippe Clement to land McKenna for a bargain basement price.

It’s understood the 27-year-old would be available to join on loan until the end of the season with the option of signing permanently as a free agent in the summer. McKenna was once targeted by Rodgers during the Northern Irishman’s first term in charge at Parkhead but Celtic baulked at Aberdeen’s £3.5m price tag.

He eventually moved to Forest in 2020 for what the Pittodrie club described at the time as a ‘record fee’ which had the potential to rise to as much as £6m. And he played a key role in the club’s promotion back into the Premier League. But it’s understood he has been frozen out of Forest’s first team squad over an ongoing contractual dispute and has not featured in the team since a 1-1 draw with Burnley at the end of September.

The arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo has not changed the club’s position with McKenna playing no part in the new manager’s first three squads, since the sacking of former boss Steve Cooper. And the defender is now desperate to bring his time at the City Ground to an end in order to keep his place secure in Steve Clarke’s travelling party for Euro 2024 this summer.

A move to Rangers might safeguard his seat on the plane but with Clement currently prioritising more attacking options in the transfer market it remains to be seen if the Belgian will offer him that opportunity. Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor are also believed to be monitoring the situation.

Need to disagree with that. Scales didnt look out of place in two games vs Rangers now and in some champions league games, huge games to play in for any player let alone for someone with having such little experience at that level, as well as giving a string of steady performances domestically.

He deserves a lot of credit.

    Aye, he's done brilliantly..

But, for me he would do things in game, you'd expect a Celtic CB to do and I'd be praising him, if that makes sense..not so much now where we expect him to perform at the level he's set..

No doubt he has been a big surprise and deserves his place.

Edit: We were also talking specifically about the CL, which was tough for all our defenders.

Apparently Welsh's injury not as bad and should be back soon so suppose not as much of a priority.

Still would of taken him for a small fee but if he ends up going to the huns then he's a dud and was never good enough for us.

Aye I'd imagine if they are in for him and he interested in a move back to Scotland he'll have asked his agent to contact us.

Basically the record haven't a clue and its a classic case of Scottish players leaving England so link with the two up there.

They are skint that's why they are looking at him and we shouldn't be chasing the same * players as they are with the amount of money we have .
Show some * ambition and bring in a real quality player from Europe somewhere to play in Europe next season.

Sure I read that Welsh's injury isn't as bad as they first thought.

Ntcham was a moody c***, but surely still goes down as a success - had some big moments and some great performances for us.

If it's true we can get him on loan and pick him up on a free then it makes even more sense. There is virtually no risk.

Forest would be paying some/possibly all his wages. Plus, if he absolutely bombs here, since it's only a loan, we could change our mind. I guess unless it's written into the loan agreement that we have an obligation to sign him permanently.

There are so many positives and so few negatives. I'll be astounded if we don't at least make an attempt to sign him.

Jozo goes down as unsuccessful, due to injuries maybe but he wasn’t worth what we paid for his output for us. 5 seasons 129 appearances, average of 25 odd a season. Not worth the outlay.

I think he probably does when you take the overall package. The argument then would be that could you blame the club for that and would he have been more successful had it not been for his injury issues.

I don’t think his talent and ability when he played meant he was an unsuccessful purchase at £5m. Same way with Julien, we really only got a good 2 years out of him before he got badly injured but I think he was worth the £7m because he was clearly an excellent defender.

I can see it from the club point of view, they would probably deem both Julien and Jozo as unsuccessful because they weren’t financially sound investments. I think the point I was making was that in terms of ability and how good they were when they played games, they were worth the initial investment at the time.

I also think that, most of the players we should sign at that sort of price, between £6m-£10m, they should be younger players with the ability to sell them on. Julien was 27 when we bought him for £7m… I wouldn’t have spent £7m on a 27 year old personally but I would have spent say £7m on Jozo, who was far younger with bigger potential.

If it’s £7m on an experienced player that’s going to really improve or team, make the difference in Europe, ready made player - I’d be all over that.
