Celts are out for defensive reinforcements but Record Sport understands there has been no new bid for Aberdeen centre back Scott McKenna.

The Parkhead club had a £3.5m bid for the Scotland star rejected by the Dons in the summer and are convinced they could land up to £10m for the 21-year-old from clubs in England.

Aston Villa remain in the hunt and Celtic are continuing to monitor the situation – but won’t splash out the cash for the youngster in January.

Aberdeen are adamant they will only do business in this window if they can negotiate a loan back arrangement for the remainder of the campaign.

 

Would a loan back be that bad? Get the deal done and save us a job in the summer when Boyata goes and Benkovic leave. Personally I think McKenna is a good solid centre back and probably one of the best if not the best in the country. He is still very young considering his experience so would have time to develop and could be a long term solution.

 

Paying £4 million+ for a guy that isn't even worth it, to then not even have him as an option for the next 5 months when we are crying out for CB options would be as bad a deal as giving Bobo Balde £32,000 a week and allowing him to speak to other clubs and leave on a free in 6 months if he wanted to.

 

John Souttar is just as good a defender as him but can actually play with the ball at his feet. McKenna is nowhere near the quality we need to replace Benkovic and Boyata, he’s Hendry/Jozo level of replacement.

 

Hearing that this one is looking very much on.

 

He will play on Saturday if this signing is true.
