Brown is the only player that is holding our midfield together. Take away his tough tackling, boundless energy, and harrassing and harrowing of opposing
midfielders and we would crumble. He is one of those players who is an an unsung hero, but any football observer of any note, can see his immense contribution to our midfield. What we need first and foremost is a new combative defensive midfielder to dovetail with Brown next year, which would allow Brown to do more of his trademark surging runs into the opposition's box. We see Brown do this very often for Scotland, but that is because generally he has a better quality defensive midfielder alongside him.

If we could get someone of the mould of Steve Sidwell or Kevin Nolan alongside Brown, our team would take on a new dynamic shape and power like never before I reckon.

i dont like our midfield at the moment, it all seems so broken and not together, its like 4 individuals as opposed to 4 team players, id like to get us passing properly first too many times players are dwelling on the ball or punting it away or giving a * pass

What a player he was at Hibs though. He was a threat to us every time.

Think someone's already made the point though. he's a spoiler at best, which is why he was probably effective playing against us for Hibs.

Celtic need players that can open up defences.

I know what you mean, I give him credit when he plays well, but he doesn't give me much praise material. What do you think he did well today?

    Too little too late.

Compliment his ability to run around all you want, but you can't escape the fact that the technical aspects to his game are simply not good enough. He doesn't provide enough in defence, he doesn't provide enough going forward, he doesn't link up well - all crucial aspects of a midfielders performance, and he can't do it.

We're talking about simple stuff here: take the ball from a defender, pass it to a Celtic player, and move forward to receive the next pass; cycle, rinse and repeat.

Spot on. I got a sneaking suspicion that he just can't handle the level of expectation that are inherant at Celtic, and which are abviously lower at Hibs or when on Scotland duty. When expectations are not so high, the all-action & aggro approach he has can appear as being plucky or up for a fight, but when there are demands for performance he is all too often found out for what he is - a headless chook.

If he does go to a mid-table club I could envisage him doing OK, possibly even a fan's favourite (as he is for Scotland), however he would never cut it at a club in the upper echelon of a decent league.

I still am of the opinion he isn't good enough as well, purely because technically he just isn't, but this past couple of games will do us and him no harm.

I reckon if he produces a battling display in the huns game we can comfortably ship him down South for the figure we paid for him.

I think the idea that we can get some really creative playmaker CM who can also do the defensive shift is not likely. We have not had true playmakers since McStay and Collins. We have just had sitters and box to box runners. We could only afford people of the quality of McStay/Collins when Scotland itself was producing those sort of players. We would never be able to buy in that level of player. I thought that Simon Ferry looked like a playmaker type. Maybe bring him back earmarked as a first pick in the summer. Punt NGuemo and we may as well punt Crosas because noone will play him.

    Except Suzy McGuire :icon_mrgreen:

We've been crying out for a creative midfielder for years, I always thought Naka was more effective in the middle.

We've tried a few thing like Ki and ZZ, but never quite seem to find the answer.

You've said it yourself before as well, Brown seems to only really do a job in a 'destructive' roll in the middle, probably why yesterday suited him.

Actually Ki maybe has potential to be a playmaker type but he needs a battler in there with him. Maybe a Ki-Broony combo would work. Maybe worth a try in the two non-OF games left.

I think N'Guemo and Brown are very similar types of player. Judging by this season alone N'Guemo simply does the same job better - probably with less cards as well. Can Brown get back to POTY form or are we going to be spending a 4th season waiting for the best from him?
