Ange Postecoglou has said the door is “always open” for Scott Brown to return to Parkhead after the nine in a row winning captain left Premiership rivals Aberdeen to focus on a coaching career.

The Celtic manager hailed Brown as one of the club’s greatest ever players and said there will always be a welcome place there for him.

The 36-year-old, who spent 14 years at Celtic before leaving in 2021, played 33 times for the Dons this season but decided to hang up his boots earlier this week.

The decision came shortly after the departure of Stephen Glass as the Pittodrie side slipped into tenth place in the league.






Brown won ten league titles at Celtic and captained the Hoops to a historic quadruple treble during a trophy-laden spell in Glasgow.

The current manager wouldn’t be against the idea of the iconic skipper returning to Parkhead.

When asked about reports linking Brown with a coaching role at Celtic on Thursday Postecoglou said: “I am not sure what you are referring to but from my perspective, I don’t think anyone should be in any doubt that there will always be an open door here for Scott Brown.

“The guy is one of the legends of this football club and will go down as one of its greatest ever.




In terms of what he wants to do with his future, I think he is best placed to answer that.

“He has obviously made a decision right now and it’s up to him to chart his course.

“From my perspective, he is a guy who I have admired from afar and having been here now for the last eight or nine months and just hearing about him and the kind of person he was as much as a footballer, as I said, he has left a massive legacy here at this football club.

“So from that perspective, whatever he does in the future I am sure there will always be a welcome place for him here.”

Brown, 36, left his player/coach role with Aberdeen earlier this month and is currently enjoying a hiatus away from the game.




However, he remains close friends with former Hibernian teammate Steven Whittaker, who is now on the coaching staff with the Pars.

Although Brown lives in Edinburgh, he hails from Hill of Beath and still has family in Fife.

And an invite was extended for Brown to take part in a session with the Championship outfit last week. It was readily accepted, as the decorated Hoops hero keeps his fitness up.


Brown, who has aspirations to move into management in the fullness of time, also spent some time behind the scenes with John Hughes’ side, before attending their 1-1 draw with Morton on Friday night.

Hughes has shown a willingness to throw open the doors at Dunfermline training since taking the reins. Brian Rice and John Collins have been among those who have visited to discuss the game and offer counsel.



While Brown will be welcome to maintain his sharpness with the Pars in future weeks, his presence at training is unlikely to herald a permanent switch to East End Park in any capacity.



Brown made a total of 787 appearances for Hibs, Celtic and Aberdeen, and earned 55 Scotland caps.


In a statement released in the aftermath of his Dons exit, he wrote: “Unfortunately the season didn’t go as well as we had hoped, and with the managerial change at the club, the opportunity to both play and coach wasn’t there anymore.

“After speaking with Jim and Aberdeen, we decided it was best for us to part ways.

“It has been a whirlwind few days and I am going to take some time to consider all my options and relax with my family. I am sure I will get a few rounds of golf in as well.”
