McGeady and McCarthy play for Ireland because they're Irish! They may not have been born on the island, but they have Irish blood running through their veins, and more importantly clearly feel Irish.

The fact that grown men get worked up about that, and feel they're in a position to tell others what they are and how they should feel, is almost comical.

 

Your wiki source is wrong then. His decision was made easier due to the HFA overlooking him till he was 17 years old, at which stage he was already established within the Irish set up.

I think it's been well established that people are only bothered because both McGeady and McCarthy are good footballers; it has * all to do with them choosing Ireland.

The only people claiming it's because they're Irish, is the Irish themselves.

Either way even if he did have to wait until he was 17, my point still stands he could have had a long career representing his country. He'd barely started playing for the Celtic senior team at that age.
