Anyone do Accounting at Uni? If so, what's it like?

I just graduated with a degree in accountancy from Glasgow back in May. It's a good course, and one which is generally looked upon pretty highly. I'm not sure how it works at other uni's but the vast majority of the work is discursive rather than numerical. Sure, there are a lot of subjects which have numerical aspects to them, but the focus in most subjects was on understanding key areas and issues and being able to discuss these in exams.

I would definitely say I enjoyed it, although if you're seriously considering it I'd make sure you research the degree properly before doing it. The drop-out rate wasn't particularly high compared to some other degrees, although plenty of people found themselves asking why on earth they chose to do it in the last year or so as they found a lot of the degree content pretty dull.

One of the best things going for accountancy degrees is how comparatively easy it is to find work after you graduate. I, and just about everyone I knew at uni, have found good jobs within 6 months of graduating, whereas plenty of people doing other degrees have found it incredibly tough to find work. I've been working in audit since the turn of the year, which is what a high percentage of graduates tend to go into after graduating, although you can do just about anything with an accountancy degree, in the finance industry or somewhere else if you wish.

Aye I read that Auditing is the main source of work after getting your degree. What's that like? I've always thought auditing/number crunching sounded really boring but to be honest I'm pretty clueless about what it entails.

And just on your point about the course, discussion is what I like. I've always been very good at essay based exams like English, History etc for that reason. Pretty good communication skills I'd say.

Also, there's still a decent chance I could fail to get the grades. Uni I'm aiming for asks for an AAA/AAB at A-Level which will be tricky as *.

I started Accounting in college a couple of Years back. It was Awful and just not for me, mindnumbingly boring. Quit after 5 months :smiley-laughing002:

Into the Sciences now. Biology and Chemistry. Think I want to do Biomedical Science.

I've found audit to be pretty enjoyable so far, I barely covered it at uni so I wasn't sure what to expect myself either tbh. I do a variety of stuff, mainly consisting of testing how well company's internal controls work and using the results to write reports on how well the company is operating or whether the figures in the company's accounts can be deemed accurate. It's really a fairly even mix between numerical and non-numerical work. Lots of travelling too!

Ah well if those are your strong points then you'd be pretty well suited to the course I reckon, and if you like discursive stuff then you'd probably enjoy it. I'm not going to lie and say that everything you cover is thrill a minute stuff, because it's not, although there's plenty of interesting topics that you cover.

Aye it's an absolute nightmare getting the grades to get in, courses like accountancy always have a lot of competition as well. Hopefully if you stick in you'll be fine though. :50:

Nice one, you might have convinced me to take it on then :smiley-laughing002: I've still a while to decide right enough.

Graduating this year and dreading entering the job market. I've enjoyed aspects of uni but I regret the lack of experience I have. Degrees are counting for less nowadays and my degree (politics) isn't specialised so there isn't a cert route to go down.

Advice for future students is join every society and group going and keep active throughout your course. It'll count massively in future employers eyes.

I know this answer is well late but i only just got on this thread. :icon_mrgreen:

    The answer is 1.
    Follow:
    40+40 = 80.
    80x0 or 80 zeros = 0
    0+1 = 1 so answer is 1

    I'm sure it's 41 mate. You multiply the 40 x 0 first, so as 1888Paul1967 says it'd end up like 40 + (40 x 0) + 1.... Which then equals 40 + 0 + 1.

At least that's what my knowledge on simple Maths would suggest :smiley-laughing002:

You would be correct if the second 40 was in brackets with the 0 which separates the question but Marie didn't put it in brackets which means that you start with first number and follow on from there.

You shouldn't dread entering the job market.
Since it isn't specialised, why not visit Scottish parliament. Just ask your local MP if it's possible, get some introductions and take it from there. The parties are always looking out for members.
Or, you could relocate. If you are willing to do that, then you have a better chance.
Just got to have the confidence.
My step daughter graduated with a 2:2 in Psychology. I took her to her first interview as she doesn't have transport. She got the job easily with a pharmaceutical company and has just been headhunted for another job in same field at double pay of other job (jammy sod :icon_mrgreen:). Partly because she had the confidence going for it.

Order of operations means that the multiplication takes priority mate. So the brackets are there, whether we see them or not.
    It's definitely 41!

    Cheers for the advice mate.
I think I'm restricting myself from applying to many places because of my principles but my principles aren't going to pay my bills. Its a tough one. You're right on the confidence thing though, got to swagger in like John Wayne otherwise you'll be skelped out the door.

I'm lucky to have a wee part-time number that keeps me ticking over so if I don't hit full-time employment after I graduate all I can do is continue to gain experience through other means.

Graduating this year too, hopefully getting into a masters course, either petroleum finance economics or oil and gas accounting, really need this 2:1 though, on course to get it but no room for any fuckups.

This would only be true if the equation was:

    (40 + 40) x 0 + 1 = ?

    Which it isn't.
