Wish we done it more like the North-American system. Got a Canadian lecturer who is continually astounded at the weighted importance we place on one-off exams over here. She got approval for an all coursework assessed module this year, which I gratefully signed up for. Exams always take my final mark down so much man!

Anyone decent at economics? Trying to answer a past paper question that's pretty much guaranteed to come up and don't have a scooby what I'm doing. Not done any maths since leaving school in '05. Question -

A perfectly competitive firm sells two goods. A price for the first good is £54. A price
for the second good is £22. The total cost for a firm is given by the expression:

    TC (Q1, Q2) = 3Q1² + 2Q1Q2 + (½) Q2² + 6Q1
    a) Find the maximum profit and the optimal values of Q1 and Q2.

    b) If the firm can not produce in total more than 14 units, then what would be the
maximum profit and the optimal values of Q1 and Q2? Find an answer using the
Lagrange multiplier. Find a value of the Lagrange multiplier. What economic
interpretation has the Lagrange multiplier in this context?

Flatmate helped me with a) and got Q1=2, Q2=18 with £246 max. profit. Is that right? And how the * do you go about using the Lagrange multiplier?

Just need to scape a pass then I'm dropping economics.

Hmm for the first part of the question i think you need to optimise, you need to integrate the equation in order to get rid of the powers, or is it differentiation, the one where you take away -1 from the power.

Anyway i did this in second year i think but i have completely forgotten how to do this, is this microeconomics you are doing, in fact it may well have been first year. I would advise you to continue with economics, if you choose topics that aren't based on maths, avoid ones like maths and stats and econometrics then its actually quite enjoyable.

Sorry i couldn't be more help, in 4th year doing economics but i didn't choose advanced microeconomics this year because i knew it would be riddled with maths.

Aye 2nd year micro. Did the -1 from the powers so that parts probably right then cause I don't think there's much else that can go wrong. Actually ridiculous how bad I've got at maths since leaving school.

Was planning on doing joint psychology/economics but the amount of maths involved this semesters put me off. Don't think I'll have the choice now anyway cause I think we need a C in both semesters to get into 3rd year. And if that question above plus one about Cournot/Bertrand/Stackelberg don't come up then I'm *.

Got sociology and economics on Wed, then Psychology on Thurs.

My research topic in college is why are football attendances in scotland declining, I have to do a literature review, so I need to find info on this and reference them, anyone that can recommend a good website about this would be helpful.

They arent really declining though, recently they have but overall they are still higher now than what they were 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 or 50 years ago. Was only from the late 90s to the late 2000s that they went up quite a lot probably because teams were spending more money and more "quality" foreign players were signing.

I found micro in second year really difficult, not because it was maths based but because it had been 3 years since i did higher maths so all this integration, differentiation crap i had totally forgotten.

And the lecturer assumed former knowledge which i did have but couldn't remember so i was just sitting in lectures going, ' i don't have a * clue how you are doing that' by exam time i studied hard and got 12/20 overall, not exactly brilliant but a decent pass.

Macroeconomics which you will be doing next semester is much more enjoyable.

So i left school at 16, thought i wanted to do something in computing side of things in future. so went to college Completed and int1 and int2 course last two years now im half way through HNC. Thing is im not really sure now if its what i want to do, im not enjoying at all any more. Due to not enjoying what im not studying anymore im starting to fail tests and fall behind because i cant motivate myself to do revision and stuff. I've hear if you go back a level in another subject you dont get funded for it ie bursary n stuff. Any of you's got any advice or went though the same as what im feeling the now.

Not got my exams til the 17th of January either. Only problem is that I'll have to re-learn my entire microeconomics course cause I'll forget it all over xmas.

Celtic through and smashed 2 of the 3 psy questions. \o/

Ended up prepared 4 essays for the last section and * all came up. Question was something along the lines of "similarities and differences between object recognition with the eyes open and with the eyes closed?" Finished with "in comparison, you can't recognise an object with your eyes closed because your eyelids are in fact shut." :54:

I'm thinking of going to college then go onto uni after a year at college. Has anyone done this? Is it a good idea? I'm doing it because I don't think I'm mature enough to go to Uni, yet. And I don't know if I'll get the grades at school so hopefully I can do something at college to get them.

First exam today, studied for about 4/5 hours max yet the essay questions were perfect for me so I'm confident that I've done well

American history exam next on Wednesday
