CELTIC are among the favourites to sign one of the Championship's top attacking players.
But they face stiff competition from a host of Premier League sides
The Hoops are locked in a tense title battle with Rangers at the minute but Brendan Rodgers' scouting department will already have eyes on new recruits for next season.
With Adam Idah to head back to Norwich City and potential offers coming in for Kyogo Furuhashi, Matt O'Riley and Reo Hatate, there could be some important boots to fill for the 2024-25 campaign.
One man who could do that is Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics.
Bookies have Celtic as second favourites to sign the attacking midfielder, who won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland over the weekend thanks to his scintillating form in the league (he came on as a sub against Belgium, alongside current Celt Idah
The 28-year-old has bagged 21 goals for Rovers this term, despite the team itself struggling near the foot of the table.
He also scored six times in three FA Cup games for the Ewood Park side.
It's an even more remarkable feat given that Szmodics isn't an out-and-out striker.
Positionally he prefers to play as a number 10 just behind a main striker, not too dissimilar to how O'Riley was used earlier in the season.
Szmodics came through the youth ranks at Colchester United and made over 150 appearances for the Essex club before an ill-fated move to Bristol City.
He struggled for game time and was loaned to Peterborough United, for whom he would then join on a permanent basisCrilly likes this. -

21 goals for a poor team is mad, but 28 years old feels like it good be a on off season

Don’t really understand us being linked with so many players at the moment, probably all paper talk, as if we don’t win the league Rodgers won’t be the manager going into next season anyway.

We’ve less than 4 scouts on the books and that’s being generous, and we’re Celtic.
I’d be critical of the way we operate if I supported Montrose, but we’re actually Celtic, and our recruitment is ran like a semi pro club. -
I'd be pretty happy with this one, he's having a breakout season this season aye, but has been a consistent contributer through league 2, 1 and ten championship for years now. It would likely be a replacement for MoR, but I'd imagine he won't come cheap.

I'd be quite happy with this tbh.

Watching his goals and looking at his stats this morning. Looks a decent player, his goal scoring numbers are great obviously this season and even if that went back to his XG numbers they are still impressive. His finishing looks strong and composure in front of goal.
The one thing I wonder is where exactly he would fit in our team. From the highlights he is often in an almost false 9 role and gets a lot of goals from intelligent movement, not dissimilar to how Kyogo season one was for us before it became more about cut backs.
He seems pretty flexible sometimes almost playing as an inverted winger running in on the blind side of full backs and centre backs. He also looks like he plays more like a 10 or probably domestically could be one of the attacking 8’s if we still play one sitting and two attacking centre midfielders.
He makes a lot of good third man runs playing off a big striker or goes beyond them when they drop in. Not sure how him and Kyogo would link up, as there are a lot of similarities in how they get goals.
The other player than Kyogo that his goalscoring reminds me of is Commons, mainly in terms of his finishing from in and around the box and again ability to find space to get shots off.
Given he’s 28 and will be 29 in September I can see us having a chance of getting him, I think he has one year left on his deal come the summer and that is Blackburn’s one year option so if they don’t sell him they lose him for nothing. Blackburn also aren’t out of the relegation battle in the championship there is only 3 points between them and 22nd. Although there are a good few teams involved down there. -
Turnbull with a “foreign” name. No thanks.

Celtic are set to battle Brentford for the signature of Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Hoops have recently been linked with a move for the Championship hot-shot, who has bagged 27 goals and three assists across 40 appearances in all competitions this season.
Now, well-placed sources have told Football Insider that they will face competition from the Bees and other bottom-half Premier League outfits for the attacker.

21 goals in 37 matches from midfield in the Championship and he’s in his prime. It’s a no brainer if a deal is doable.

Sounds like a new Commons, players like that are worth their weight in gold for us.
