Did I say that ? You can be world class and not be up there with Messi and Ronaldo

David Silva is world class and he isn't up there with Messi and Ronaldo is he ?

Nah, I generally think if you are 'world-class' then you should be near enough equal, maybe not entirely, but nearly equal with these fellows.

David Silva isn't world class. He isn't anywhere near consistent enough to be labelled that. Ibrahimovic is and he is near the level of Messi and Ronaldo.

What constitutes world class in your opinion? Being in a world 11 team or maybe in the top 50 players in the world? This is not a trick question as I am sure most people have different opinions on what constitutes world class.

On the Rooney thing I am glad they see fit to * away 300K per week on Rooney. EPL teams have too much money and the more they squander the better it is for the rest.

No doubting he's world class IMO.

Never worth that in a million years though, not in some hippy footballers aren't worth it scale but on a relative to other players one.

No player, doesn't matter how good they are should be on 300k a week. Its an absolute joke that anyone gets that sort of money a week.

I realise people have differing opinions on what world class is. I thought and still think that Henrik Larsson was world class.

Rooney is world class. I don't want to get into top 50's and world 11's etc but I know Rooney I would consider Rooney in all of those.

Messi, one of the greatest players to ever live, doesn't publicly drag his club through the gutter every time he feels like he wants a few extra thousand quid a week.

Messi's wages are also absurd for the record.

Personally, as the highest profile player in my country, I wouldn't mind setting a precedent. Along with his fellow top pro's he's living in a bubble.

Aye you could try and set a precedent but do your being extremely naive if you really think other footballers would follow it. They are in it to make as much money as they can.

The fact some wee Ned from Liverpool is being paid that much money to kick a ball around a park is obscene, football has gone to pot.

I can see why footballers get paid so much, the clubs turn over huge amounts of money, and even at £300k a week Rooney is only taking a small percentage of that, when he will probably view himself as a big asset.

However it is becoming an absolute joke. Wages should reflect skill level in any profession, Rooney is a good player, but £300k a week? I don't think so..

This is what it comes down to. Rooney may be getting around £14.4m a year, but if he can generate at least that for Man Utd then it makes sense. And in the context of football money nowadays that isn't that out of line. If he can be the difference between Man Utd finishing 4th and 5th this season, that will likely be worth £14.4m in itself for getting them into the champions league, never mind the money he raises in maketing the brand. I remember watching the Germany World Cup in China, and the biggest marketing billboard I saw in all of Beijing was a super-sized Wayne Rooney poster in the main shopping centre. And the amount of Chinese guys wearing England top was incredible. If guys like Rooney can punt brands in marketplaces throughout the world to hundreds of millions of people then I can see where £300k a week goes.

And it certainly doesn't make him greedy for taking it.
