As I said in an earlier post, I think Rooney has been better THIS season so far. He has scored 32 goals which you can't argue with. Messi is a more gifted player though. If we get Man U v Barca again, we can see who does more for their team as well as the world cup. Right now I'd say Rooney but it's close as both are playing well.

I think the votes tell the story...

Messi's approximately three times the player Rooney is. :50:

Aye, 2nd best out of three. :86:

Being serious, for me he is not near the standard of either Ronaldo or Messi.

The English media have hyped him up of course, as they did with Beckham before him. But I never saw Beckham as one of the world's best players, and I don't see Rooney up there either.

In current form it's Rooney for me.

    Overall it's Messi.

I would have said the same thing 2 weeks ago but Messi's really turned it back on. They both have the same goal/match ratio this year, Messi's scored 8 in 4 matches, and he has a lot more assists than Rooney as well. The scoring prowess of Messi is made even more impressive by the fact that he's a winger whereas Rooney is a striker.

barca play 433 with messi playing up top with ibra and henry . ibra plays in the middle , henry plays on the left and messi plays on the right with a licence to free roam like you seen on wednesday . messi is a striker

He doesn't play on the forward line. He's a winger. Barca have a point man that plays striker while the other two wingers press up aggressively. It's where Henry played originally at Monaco under Wenger and both of them have described the position as a winger. You'll notice that both Messi and whoever plays out left drop a lot deeper for defense than whoever is up top if you watch their matches. There are hardly any clubs nowadays that play a pure 4-3-3 with 3 strikers... more often it's a hybrid 4-3-2-1 except instead of having the traditional pairing of inside attacking mids supporting the striker, they press them outside as wingers, although Messi kind of straddles the border of what an attacking mid and a winger do.

You're only going on about him because your a Man Utd 'fan'. I bet if he played for Liverpool and was playing like he is now you would be saying Messi is the better player. The bottom line is that any unbiased individual that watches the two players with any regularity knows that Messi is by far the superior player. He is capable of doing things with the ball that Rooney simply cannot, Ronaldo is the same.

    And Messi isn't a striker, he's a winger.

(He's just scored AGAIN as I type this)

The goal he has just scored should be enough to close this thread. Absolutely incredible.

Messi is absolutely unbelievable. We are witnessing the modern day Maradona , possibly even better. He is a genius.

Messi has really turned it on since this thread started 34 goals in 38 games - 25 league goals in 24 games - now compared to Rooney's 33 in 39.
