Dear me, a lot of hand wringing in this thread and 'he was alright but...' type comments. I'd like to know who you guys actually rate. Man was the greatest politician in my thirty odd years in the planet. Had the balls to see through his socialist convictions at a time when they were almost destroyed worldwide by the neoliberal consensus of Washington, the IMF etc. Used oil money to help the majority rather than the few at the top, drastically reduced poverty and increased health and education resources enormously. Also inspired Latin America to stick up for itself against America from Bolivia to Brazil. All while receiving massive electoral mandates across 14 years in the most free elections on earth, according to ex US president Carter no less. Guy was a hero.

Didn't really know about Chavez but having read through this forum and also some articles about him. I think the world needs more people like this then maybe we wouldn't be in such poverty worldwide. Having spent a few weeks in Kibera, Kenya in January and seeing world poverty at its worst. I Salute what Chavez has done for his people.

    RIP HUGO CHAVEZ :shamrock:

I don't know if I'm one of the people the bit in bold is directed at. I agree with everything you say you say in this post, I actually came in this room for the first time just to look for this thread and leave my respects- there's not many people I'd do that for! I merely acknowledged he wasn't perfect in order to go on to respond to the people who were describing him as shady etc. He wasn't perfect (e.g. I once saw him praising the Soviet Union in an interview with a Russian journalist); but if you look at what he did, he definitely was a great man.

They've been sticking the old 'controversial leader' spin on it.

    You find it funny?

The U.S. has a track record of infecting and using humans for testing.

I find it hilarious. Come on, RIP for the man but to posit that the US "gave" the man cancer is indeed funny. Cancer is not a transmitted disease like HIV or the flu. Now, I admit the US is involved in more than its fair share of dirty conspiracies but they could have developed a much simpler way of killing the man if they wanted to (i.e., Che Guevara).

It's pretty difficult to kill him in the manner of che when he is an international statesman and not a revolutionary guerilla fighting in the jungle.

The US already tried to orchestrate an overthrow and it failed miserably. Had they assassinated him, as some nutjobs like Pat Buchanan wanted, they would have been pariahs in Latin America and it would have backfired.

The suggestion that he was poisoned came from the Venezuelan vice president and soon likely president so it's not internet conspiracy. I think anyone who doesn't believe that they have the capability to do that is being naive, the USA has a trillion dollar military-industrial/pharmaceutical industry.

I guess we won't know for years, if ever.

Exposure to radiation will give you cancer, so dont be suprised what the American goverment/military could have there hands on..
I would say they more lilkey than not had something to do with it..

First off Pat Buchanan is who and what clout does he have other than bark on Fox news every once in a while about the evils of immigration? What authority does he have in the US government?

All I was saying that cancer is not a virus or bacteria and not contagious. If someone was injected with cancer cells, a healthy body simply gets rid of them. Now, they certainly could have poisoned him leading toward toxic death or done some much more with a multibillion dollar defense and intelligence budget if they wanted. But I am probably just being way too naïve as you suggest.

    Again, RIP for the man.

Thats a bit ridiculous I would say. I know this may be hard for you to believe but America doesn't cause everything bad in the world. Millions die all around the world from cancer every year and most of them aren't poisoned.
