    Aye, big man/little man.

81 crosses per match, Davie Moyes style. Steven Fletcher and Leigh will be the new Hateley and McCoist. The rest of Europe will be * quaking.

442 is a perfectly viable formation, but it's certainly not a must. People act like a simple formation change will make us a dangerous free flowing attacking unit. Will it *.

Love how a few years ago we were moaning that we played 442 too much and it was an old/dead formation, that we weren't adventurous enough and we needed to be more modern and fluid in our play to develop as a club to the next level.

Now just because one manager didn't have us winning every game with pure modern class we want to resort back to the old, tried and tested.

I think 2 strikers on the pitch in the league is the way to go. Formation shouldn't make a difference.

This is how I think we'll go next season roughly.

    Lustig/Janko - Erik - Jozo - Tierney
Brown - Rogic (if Bitton goes)
    Roberts - Johansen - Armstrong
    Griffiths

Big question is what formation we will play next season, and whether we'll play 2 up front. To be honest, I don't think it makes a massive difference on whether we play with the 2 in the league. It's just about players playing to the level they can and creating chances and scoring goals.

Question marks over a few positions, namely RB, who's gonna playing holding role beside Brown, and whether we will sign a new forward-thinking player in either a striker or attacking midfielder. I also have a feeling Bitton will be off in the summer.

That starting XI leaves a fairly decent bench of the likes of Commons, Allan, Chrstie, CKR, Boyata, Mackay-Steven, McGregor, Henderson once we get rid of the deadwood.

If Deila had changed from 4-2-3-1 I reckon he would still have a job next season. Obviously we wouldn't be world beaters playing 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, but that formation he's playing held this team back in a big way.

If he hadn't signed nuggets like Ciftci, Armstrong, GMS he might be in a job still. If he'd signed an actual defensive mid he might be in a job. FWIW 4-3-3 is my preferred formation but it's not a remedy for mediocre players. I'm more concerned with who we put out on the pitch, rather than how we put them out.

Both are concerns for me. As inadequate as the current crop are, they are better than what they have been playing all season, surely most people would agree? That shows you how important formation and tactics are.

You've just said your preferred formation is 4-3-3, and I'm sure most people here prefer something other than 4-2-3-1.. but so many seem to be putting 4-2-3-1 as their formation just because the outgoing manager uses it :smiley-laughing002:

Why would you think I was joking? What part seems unrealistic? The fact I had Messi on the bench or...? :bbpd::56:

Nah, more like because a ridiculous amount of managers use it and there's a hair-breadth of difference between it and 4-3-3

Crazy Rodgers formation that he tried at Liverpool (ok it's not that crazy, it's just 3 at the back).

    Gordon

    Ambrose Erik Mulgrew

    Janko Bitton Johansen* Tierney

    Rogic

    Griffiths Roberts

*Allen in for Johansen if he can sign him.

I know people will complain about Ambrose but he's a good ball player and maybe playing with 2 other CBs would help him.

Definitely not a hair-breadth of difference, there's a major difference. Mostly in midfield, it's a lot more solid.

If that's how you want us to play next season then fair enough mate. I'm sick and tired of it, but if you think that's how we should play then fair do's. Just as long as people aren't under some illusion we have to play that way next season :50:

IMO, terrible formation and way to play football, far too negative for Celtic in the SPFL and ineffective in Europe.

Suggesting from today there's potential for a 4-3-3 based on youth. These are the young guys, obviously you play the more experienced ones in the bigger games.

    Gordon

    Janko Erik Mulgrew Tierney
    McGregor Ajer Rogic
    Roberts Griffiths Christie.

Midfield works with Rogic in an "iniesta" role with McGregor and Ajer controlling the park, taking it in turns to support the attack.
Front three have complete freedom to roam and line up how they want, but they're all responsible for getting goals.
Full backs provide all the width.
Keep the ball on the deck, quick short passes in and around the front three.

Brown and Henderson can cover central midfield.
Armstrong in Rogic or Christie's role.
Forest (if fit) can play in Robert's slot.
    Izzy and Lustig covering fullbacks.
Just get in a new CB and see if another striker is around.

Think we could let go Ambrose, Blackett, Izaguirre, Commons, Mackay-Steven, Forrest, Ciftci, Scepovic and Cole.

Bring in a new left-back squad player and our 2 main signings should be a left sided player like Roberts and a striker like a Hooper.
