So, what's people's thoughts of someone being accused of being racist if they make a derogatory comment about a Muslim? That seems to be the most common form of supposed racism I see touted these days.

It seems that racism against black people has died out of late, with black folk now being considered cool more than anything else.

Basically racists tend to be full of some pretty deep insecurities and frustrations and are just looking for an easy soft target to take their frustrations out on.

The Irish and the blacks are no longer soft targets so they have shifted their insecurity and frustration onto Muslims.

The problem I have is that the term "racist" is so easily tossed about nowadays that the effect it actually has is becoming diluted.

The Muslim thing really ticks me off, because that has * all to do with race. Islam isn't a race, it's a religion.

If someone harbours a deep-seated hatred for a particular religious group then I classify that as bigotry, not racism. And that's not an attempt to downplay religious bigotry, as I consider a bigot to be just as offensive and repugnant as a racist.

The classifying of someone as a racist because they misuse terms such as "chinky" and "*" when referring to shops or restaurants in an innocent manner is mental really. Those types of people aren't racists for the most part. Uneducated? Dim? Stuck in their ways depending on their age? Absolutely. But not racist in my opinion.

The term has lost a lot of its meaning these days I think, which is a shame, as actual racists now bat such accusations away with relative ease because of that.

Well as we all know, Islam isn't a race, however I think people really mean 'bigot' when they say racist in regards to being derogatory about Muslims.

Part of the issue, is that some people make the link of 'Muslims = Arabs', so they can hold racist views towards people from the middle east, but simultaneously and erroneously group Muslims from the rest of the world under the same banner.

Racism against black people still exists, more so in the USA.

I think you have to have enough confidence in people to understand that the vast majority actually know what is real racism.

Some of the stuff on here over the last few months in relation to immigrants is definitely racist no matter how it is dressed up.

Having said that when you use the term Bigot on here that is often problematic as you will get a load of people that think Bigotry only means the songs the Huns sing and that racism isn't Bigotry.

There are only 5 or 6 proper racists on here and most people know who they are.

I think the racism/bigotry against Islam/Arab has become blurred. Look Arab and you can be abused as a Muslim. I think certain of the lighter skin Indians(from India) are being hassled as Muslims across America.

What do you mean by blurred, mate?

Don't know if my brain has stopped working but our interpretations of the words may differ.

I mean that certain people associate Arab with Muslim. When these people are being abused is it because they are Arab or Muslim? Is it racism or bigotry? This is what I mean by blurred.

That's what I mean though. The overuse of the term has seen the effect of the word diluted in my opinion.

Some people certainly do that, and in those cases it's usually pretty easy to tell when someone is using religion as a smokescreen to abuse people of a certain ethnic background. That, in my opinion, is racism.

However, a lot of people simply have an issue with the religion itself, and in that case they fall into one of two categories. The first is that of a bigot of course, someone who hates a religion for no reason other than the fact that those who follow it live their lives differently to themselves.

There are some people though who are simply questioning and confronting the issues that are easily found in religion. Only a fool would suggest that there aren't some serious issues when it comes to religion, especially when viewed from the vantage point of someone living in the fairly liberal, culturally diverse western world.

Those people are tarred as racists by many for questioning the Islamic religion, as anti-Semites for questioning the Jewish religion, but don't seem to get a whole lot of heat when questioning the Catholic or other Christian faiths.

Double standards definitely apply in many cases.

I don't, unfortunately. I see the term "racist" now used as a tool between two warring factions in the far-right and far-left.

Some of it definitely was, and staff had to take action on a few occasions if my memory serves me correct. However, a lot of the posts that were viewed as "anti-immigrant" were actually "anti-immigration", which is different in many cases.

It is possible to oppose mass immigration from a social & economic standpoint and not actually be racist or even bigoted.

Would a person calling to a middle eastern Christian "Muslims go home" be racism or bigotry?

That would most likely be racism, wouldn't it? The person would obviously not be dressed in Muslim attire, so why would the offender come to the conclusion that the person is a Muslim? Most likely due to the colour of their skin, right?

    Agree with all that :50:

One thing I would say regarding the 'anti-immigrant' vs 'anti-immigration' point is that whilst I agree with the premise, that they are two very different things, I have seen posters here who may be deemed 'anti-immigration', change their stance completely depending on where prospective immigrants may come from. That to me suggest a more 'anti-immigrant' stance that they selectively adopt depending on the race/ethnicity of the person in question.
