But its no longer down to the crown that that is the case. The Good Friday Agreement and the referedum agreed that it will remain that way until a majority in the north want a united Ireland. That is enshrined in both British and Irish law and was backed by a big majority of the Irish people in both the republic and northern Ireland. The crown no longer has any control over NI's status.

Personally though I think people are stuck in a grievance nursing backward looking way of thinking if they see the Queens visit as a bad thing. What more can the Queen do than go and pay her respects (she even bowed which is unheard of) at the memorial of Irish republicans. Yes they played GSTQ but the Queen also stood bowed to the Soldier Song. She will probably make some speech expressing regret at the aspects of British -Irish history. Whatever people think of her, as an individual I dont think she could really do much more than she is doing on her visit to Ireland. Even the royal family dont have time machines. I think this is an attempt to help draw a line over the cult of looking back and start afresh. You cant change the past and its a sin IMO to fill the present or taint the chance of a better future by constantly chewing over bad stuff from history. Some people just love to wallow in sad parts of history that they themselves did not live through.

Not at all...if you do intend to continue using English, you will find it is accepted practise to use question marks after all questions....even in Donegal.

When the leaders were led out of the GPO after the easter rising they ran a gauntlet of Dubliners, many of them women, who jeered, mocked and spat at them...Not much * changed there then.West Brit * !

And?They will be representatives of all Ireland then eh?
I watched the demonstrators on the news...looked like a football crowd. Most of them were between 16 and 25 and full of testosterone.Hardly a cross section of the Irish population...no or very few women...no or very few older men...mostly young guys with a few middle age ring leaders....or did you watch a different news to me?Most of them were in primary school when the GF agreement was being put through. Its funny how so few of the demonstrators were old enough to have lived through the Troubles...hmmm wonder why?Maybe because the vast majority of Ireland wants peace.....?

This is bizarre yet strangely fascinating.

I want to look on the side of things that it's at least an effort to improve relations between ROI & UK and work towards more positive engagement between the two in the future.

But I can understand why people are against the visit.

I'm indifferent about the visit. Not a royalist/monarchist nor am I Irish.

I just think it's a huge waste of money just now, especially when Ireland is in the financial state it's in.

So are you saying that anyone who was in primary school during the GFA have no right to protest against the queen and should just accept it?:31: just when I think MGM can't post more tripe, he surprasses it everytime.

The biggest problem so far does not lie with the queen of England but with the Irish government. It must have been them that organised the playing of GStQ in the Garden of Remembrance. Even though I do not agree with her visit she did conduct herself with reverence in the Garden of Remembrance.

I think * the Irish government takes precedence over FTQ in this case.

Not at all...they have as much right as anyone. If you re-read my point, it is to say that there was definitely no cross section of people among the demonstrators that i seen.Looked like a bunch of hoodies to me!No women...no older men....why were they all in that age group and predominantly male?Like i said, they looked like a football crowd.

Edit....actually that is wrong...there are many women at football these days.So...it looked like a street gang.

There was men and women in the crowd and I'm sorry if there wasn't enough pensioners for you but I'm sure the older generation have enough to be getting on with instead of getting in scuffles with the guards over an old women visiting Dublin.

I do understand that older people have better things to do....i just mean that considering the size of population Dublin has...the demonstration was very futile and should have had at least 40% women....and a lot more older people. Not necessarily pensioners, but guys in their 40's 50's etc. There were a couple, but the main body of them were very young guys.To me it points to the fact that Ireland in the main, WAS not too bothered about the visit...and many even welcomed it.The demonstration numbers were minute in reality....considering the amount of animosity i keep reading about in here. What it tells me is that the young guys in here are definitely not representative of the general Irish population.(i knew that anyway, but this is confirmation)

I was quite indifferent to her visit.. Then thought, sure its a good thing we are all moving on, and slowy but surly it helps for a United Ireland.. When I heard GSTQ would be played in the Garden of Remberence I was abit stund.. However, now that its all done, I can only take the good things away from the day, and that is the Queen bowing to our lads.. I don't care if she'd of done the cha cha to GSTQ, it means * all.. She bowed to our lads :celt_2:

Tomorrow should be interesting, she's to visit Croker, and I think thats when she makes her speech, so I'll be definitly tuning in for that. Please lads, its done now, so take the positives, and don't dwell :shamrock:

At some point in the future, you young guys will actually realise she has nothing to do with this. She pins 'em on.She does not choose the recipients. Her "Office" and the Govt and perhaps the heads of the civil service do all the choosing. She is a puppet!

Women wear hoodies too.. but thats not the point.. i think most people are like me they dont want her here but dont see the point in going down to protest..it would just cost our already bankrupt state more money ... & i did see a girl on the news trying to help burn a butchers apron..but it had trouble lighting...someone shouldve informed them that * doesnt burn :50:

I seen one also.Your point at best illustrates the apathy towards her visit. Those totally opposed were in a very small minority....and the numbers of demonstrators reflected that.
I do agree with whoever said this will be hurting Paisley's mob more than the nationalists.Every cloud and all that....
