Qatar needed a big opener today to try and distract from the bigger issues. It failed. Crap game and the stadium half empty after half time is not a good start.

It does feel as if things are bubbling up and becoming more tense.

It’s probably not that surprising, but FIFA’s handling of the situation has been a complete disaster. There was a point where I thought they might just take a ‘let’s just keep our heads down and get this over with’ approach, but they really are doubling down on making this in to even more of a shitshow. I’m a few days late on this, but Infantino’s speech was beyond embarrassing and one of the worst cases of whataboutery you’ll ever see. The attempted banning of the rainbow armbands seems like the latest of what I’m sure will be many more *-ups over the next few weeks.

In regards to the match itself:

Opening matches usually aren’t the best anyway, but this has surely got to be one of the worst.

Qatar are legitimately rank rotten. The fact that they’re the current Asian Champions beggars belief.

They looked like they could barely string more than two passes together and their ‘keeper seemingly doesn’t understand that he’s allowed to catch the ball, because it looked like he just wanted to punch it constantly. I don’t know if Qatar have a beach volleyball team, but he’d likely find far more success there.

As a sort-of aside, the BBC had a video package before the match with a Qatari football writer talking about how much Qatar loves football, that it’s no.1 sport etc. only for then less than a hour later to see their supporters abandoning the stadium in droves at half-time, because they’re losing 2-0 to Ecuador. * game/performance or not, it’s the opening match of a home World Cup! They’ve literally spent hundreds of billions and they’ve still managed to look completely tinpot.

Ecuador looked ok. Maybe I’m being generous, but I got the impression that they were taking it easy on Qatar in the second-half (whether it was them being ‘nice’ to the hosts or saving themselves for their next games, who knows). I think they’ll get out of the group, but I’d be surprised if they went beyond that.

I wonder if only beating them 2 nil could cost them like Scotland only beating Zaire by 2.

The video of the Ecuadorian fan making gestures at all the guys wearing turbans is funny as *. Basically, after their first goal gets chopped off for offside (I still don't see it), he does the hand gesture for paying off the refs. * are going mental beside him hahahahahah

In fairness, FIFA are making themselves out to be even bigger * crooks. Booking players on the pitch for a breach of code instead of getting the normal fine? * disgraceful. Hope UEFA begins negotiations to pull out of representing FIFA. * of the highest order

    Shitebags, lol.

Tbh can't be arsed with all that stuff anyway, they should have just said from the off we believe it's wrong and don't agree with it, but we will follow the rules but make sure they know their stance on the whole thing.

It's not really the place anyway for all this stuff if I'm honest.

Alex Scott no doubt getting everything for free and being paid tens of thousands to be there standing pitch side with a rainbow armband as if that in someway proves more of a point than if she never went at all. Everyone of them speaking out against it yet more than happy to take the payday are * idiots

It is precisely the place for 'all this stuff'. In the same way that when Celtic play in Israel, the fans should fly Palestine flags.

Feel like it’ll be a boring 1-0 or 2-0 England.

England nailed on for a pen.

They should be mocked for even coming up with the laces and armband type stuff, it's tiny meaningless gestures.

Be like a pub saying they are showing solidarity by putting a poster up in the disabled toilet.
