Of course it counts in a sporting sense and I wouldn't hold it against him. I would be surprised if a player decided to speak out against the tournament, especially before it.

As sad as this is, once the tournament is done the criticism will die down and folk will forget about it.

Glad to hear that because as much as there are plenty of moral dilemmas involved in it, it's still the World Cup and it's still the pinnacle of a football player's career if they manage to win it. All the politics are secondary imo.

You're right though, the criticism will die down and it will be forgotten about, which is just pathetic. It's like they mad tories, all the * they have dragged the country through the last few years will be forgotten about by the next election time, as there will be some other 'scandal' occupying people's minds. Humans as a collective are not capable of changing things for the benefit of all. So we can moan all we like about social injustice, the * with the money will do what they like regardless.

That said, I REALLY hope FIFA get their * act together going forward.

    And this is the thing,
1 week into the tournament and nobody will be all that bothered with gay and transgender rights and migrant workers. The biggest pressing problem will be how * England are and the lack of beer.
So at the end of the evening news you’ll be getting puff pieces on how England and Welsh fans are getting around the beer ban. All talk of transgender rights will be forgotten.
That’s human nature, we’ve got the collective memory and concentration of a goldfish

Anyone done the Bet365 grid game? I ended up with an Argentina v Portugal final. Had Denmark making the semis after beating England in the quarters.

I applaud folk who actually commit their lives to trying to change things for the better. A fruitless exercise at the end of the day, but we'd be even worse off if no one tried at all.

I think it will put sporting organisations off holding large events in various countries in the future. FIFA and UEFA I think will have to be especially careful.

a nice sentiment but we all know it will always be about the money, put enough money on the table and off we go.
point in question, Russia---- 2018, even though they had annex Crimea they where still aloud to host the WC.

Clearly some of that 220billion didn't make it's way to a sound engineer for the opening ceremony.

Without defending anything about Qatar hosting this World Cup, really think the BBC should just be talking about the football in the build up to the match.

Watching all the Qatari royals giving speeches at the opening ceremony and you can see they’re all bored out of their *, as if any of them kicked a ball when they were weans, more likely kicked a servant for not bringing their caviar fast enough. But saying that, it should be a laugh watching this multi billion dollar sham.
