There was a Celtic player in the late nineteenth century called Barney Battles, Sr. (what a name!). He died of pneumonia in 1905, aged 30.

Would have been quite a common death and the age.

Well, the motivations of the eurosceptic movement in Ireland will be laid bare if it does welcome him. People should find both his actions and his views reprehensible, whatever their position on the EU.

If he’s welcomed in Ireland it will be for his eurosceptic position. That’s why he’s going over, no?

Would you welcome Ian Paisley if he were there to promote his position on waste collection? :giggle1:

I’m not having a go, mate. I just think association with people like that delegitimises eurosceptic movements; it’s why many eurosceptic left-libertarians voted to remain.

The Irish naturally have a keen awareness of their sovereignty. I don’t think you have to resort to the kind of rhetoric that we seen here.

His son is synonymous with Hearts as well. A prolific goalscorer for the Jambos during the 1930’s.

I’m not in the business of denying anyone a platform to speak!

I know you’re not having a go, man. What do you mean by ‘people like that’? Farage is essentially a Conservative who is stricter on the issue of immigration. He’s well spoken and presents his case well. Politics could learn a lot from him.

He led a party whose candidates, donors and supporters variously: advocated the execution of LGBT+ people; asserted that World AIDS Day celebrates people who spread HIV; claimed that women who are married cannot be raped by their husbands; called for the compulsory abortion of disabled babies; established official links to virulently racist political parties... I could go on.

He himself has made a number of remarks along the same lines (see his comments about people who have HIV, or Romanians) - much more palatable to some people, if no less repugnant

He’s a liar too, and his salt-of-the-earth persona is ridiculous.

You’re an immigrant, supporting a football club founded by immigrants for immigrants...
