Goo old communism. You contribute what you are able to and take what you need. Marx or Engels quote can't min which one.

The problem with that kind of thinking in this day & age is that * don't need a 50" telly, X-Box, new Celtic away shirt or a pair of the latest Nikes, but they'll be wanting them regardless.

I don't see many people contributing to the cause only to get back less. I've always said that kind of philosophy would work a treat if only it weren't applying to humans.

I disagree, c***s do need them. It's not the fault of young people that the market is now so all-pervasive that these are vital tools people need to construct their social identities.

There was always an element of this in every major society (even Adam Smith talked about the importance of certain clothes for a dignified life IIRC); what is different about the situation is both the degree to which these things are important and the relative absence of accessible non-market ways of constructing a social identity, of being a person- even by comparison to our generation.

It applies to humans all the time, actually. In teams, in families, in some jobs, in many band level societies; just that nobody has yet found a way to make it work with groups of more than about 130 people. It may not be co-incidence that that is also the limit of the number of personal relationships a person can have IMO.
