Peter lawwell was the finance guy in the early 90s at Celtic, returned as CEO.

Nicholson was the finance guy under Peter lawwell during the 2010s and then became the CEO.

Anyone who really expected anything to change was deluded, myself included for a slither of hope during the Ange years.

Blatant as * since PL officially came back, that things firmly returned to type.

Ange * off because of him, I don't see it any other way.
One big meeting with the * and he saw right through him and wanted out of this.
    Don't * blame him.

I'm just honestly surprised Rodgers returned. I just don't get what he has been promised or told that made him forget the reasons why he left as well.

Only thing that makes vague sense is that the board pulled a fast one again with him, pretending things had moved on and changed behind the scenes(he alluded to this himself), but it's clear to see nothing really has at all.

Rodgers won't see out the 3 years for me.
High chance he will leave at the end of this season as well in my eyes.
Honestly wouldn't blame him for that either, just wish if that did happen, he would call out the *.

Of course he did, he made sure of that.
But he was happy at this club and I have every belief he was ready to make his mark in Europe with us. Everything was building that way with him here.

But as soon as that big meeting happened, where we got rumours of all the promises made, his agent was touting him to the big jobs and he managed to get one. Good on him.
But I don't think his name gets mentioned with the spurs job, if he wasn't asking his agent to put his name forward for it.

    This argument ultimately boils down to;

    - We can’t afford a player as good as Griezmann, therefore Greg Taylor should start for us in Europe for a few years because reasons.

    - Man Utd have lots of money and are run extremely poorly, therefore Celtic’s transfer policy is somehow justified even though it isn’t working in Europe.

    - We regularly underperform even in the Europa League where financial parity is much better, but I’ll keep pretending people are unreasonably raging about an Atletico Madrid result as if it’s a single poor result isolation and not 10 years of embarrassment.

    - We can’t sign ‘proven quality’, so u23s only. Nothing to do with an obsession with just trying to turn huge profits by spread betting on youth.

    - Giakoumakis, Juranovic, Mooy and Kyogo. 4 players signed over the age of 27, 4 success stories in the footballing department but we’re back to u23s because the only thing that matters is them profits.

Lawwell isn’t singled out because he’s an easy target. He’s singled out because he ran the club top to toe for 15 years unopposed and brought in this profit driven pish.

“If if if” nothing. We all knew we needed improvements in the squad to give us a chance at European level. We had the resources, we’ve earned them over the years, it was time to upgrade. They consciously chose not to because profit > football.

They * got to a European final a couple of years but we nearly scored two against Lazio a couple of weeks ago so everything’s definitely being done as best as it could be its just bad luck. Stop asking questions.

Not something I said. What a woeful strawman.
Completely missing the point. Spending more doesn't guarantee success. The point was demonstrating that recruitment isn't easy, especially in our position.

Folk always say things like 'There are literally 1000s of players that we could go out and sign and they'd instantly improve us'. If it was that easy, we'd go and do it. The competition is fierce, different players have different motivations for their career. There are a lot of variables that can cause deals to break down.
We haven't had 10 years of embarrassment. We topped our group in 19/20. That's not embarrassment. Drawing 2-2 at home and playing so well against Atletico at home wasn't embarrassing. Beating Anderlecht away or drawing with Man City wasn't embarrassing. There are a couple of humpings in there but that's what happens when you play against World Class players, and it happens to better sides than ours.

I'm not pretending anyone is unreasonably raging about a defeat to Atletico, as I was livid with how the players chucked it in that match. I'm still maintaining that it's embarrassing that Lawwell has become a metaphorical dartboard for a lot of supporters. Once again, it's tedious and over exaggerated.
Again, I haven't claimed we should only sign under 23 year olds. Another stawman. CL proven quality costs tens of millions unless we get manage to find someone like Jota or CCV. But finding players as good as them every window is difficult because other clubs want them too. Keeping the good players we have is difficult as I've previously explained.
This proves one of my points pretty well. All of those are fairly recent signings yet only 1 remains at the club (for now).

Nonsense, he absolutely is singled out because he's viewed as an easy target. Like it or not, as well as trying to build a successful football team, the club also has a responsibility to do it in a sustainable manner.
You can believe they consciously chose not to upgrade the squad if you want. I find it laughable.
No one said it's just bad luck, but that is one of many factors. I couldn't give a * about the huns reaching a final either, they're not our benchmark. Losing in a final shouldn't be our benchmark, winning it should be our ultimate benchmark.

You can be happy in a current job and still be looking for opportunities at a higher level elsewhere.

Ange was apparently in contact with Spurs much earlier than the meeting you're alluding to.

I was at the AGM last year

    Question from floor

"Ange, well done on your signings so far they have been great. How do we get to the next level to compete more in Europe and dominate domestically what's your plan"

"Firstly thanks, secondly don't get attached to players we have a set model but I have advised the board we need to adopt a more aggressive trading model, look at Red Bull clubs, benfica etc they buy a bit higher but flip quicker. That's what we need to do. Maybe buy 2 or 3 £8m players and flip them within 12-18/24 months for vast amounts then reinvest most if not all of that and then go to 3 £12m players rinse and repeat mate"

The model we have is what holds us back. Not lawwell he's a * but also an easy target!

His agent was whoring him out. Apparently had a gentleman's agreement to go to Leeds if they stayed up. Spurs job only came to fruition when 3 leading candidates knocked it back. Tbh I think he would have left us for ANY epl job looking at it now imo

Their was a story that Rodgers and his family wanted to settle up here once he was done. Think his wife has a lot of friends up here from previous time.

The only reason I see for him coming back is bcoz he knew it would be difficult living up here given how things ended last time. So he's came back to end things on better terms to make retirement easier and to keep his wife happy.

Hes essentially put his family and their future plans ahead of his own career.

The lengths some guys will go to to keep a wife happy. Suppose you need to work harder when she's a younger woman.

But if you followed his idea of an aggressive model then it isn't. We bought 4 players for £8m in summer and they have barely played!

The complaint is that we've been stagnant in Europe and the transfer market for 20 years. How could we make the same complaint about a new board?

Because as soon as we'd have a bad result, which is inevitable in Europe, the same old complaints would appear.

This is what you're saying. You're so mixed up in your thinking you don't even realise it.

It's constant mental gymnastics about other teams being really good and having lots of money as counter arguments to complaints we go into each seasons needlessly under-equipped. That is what you do in your posts.

We're an embarrassment in Europe and have underachieved for 10 years. Huns - a smaller club in an equally poor league - got a final for. *. sake. We've not even knocked anyone out. You be happy with a draw at home every 3 or 4 years mate, no worries. No need to address anything.

The only thing exaggerated is the mad defence of him.

It's not a strawman, it's my contention it's a position you are taking as a consequence of your arguments.

You are arguing like there are only two options, "Unaffordable Proven Champions League Quality" and what we're doing now (which is signing u23s that have barely, if ever, kicked a ball in Europe). It's wrong and it's a disingenuous position for you to take, because you know it's not true. You know fine well there is a spread of talent between those two options. The reality is the board doesn't target those players as a matter of policy because they want younger players they can make more profit on.

This is regularly admitted but when someone suggests it might not be the best policy because of our poor form in Europe, it suddenly no longer becomes 'policy' and instead it's just the way it has to be for reasons.

What point does it make? All of those signings made enormous impact in the short time they were here as they were in their prime. They were also all incredibly affordable. Sorry would we be better off right now if we hadn't signed them?

Aye, brink of bankruptcy so we are. Thank * we didn't buy a few less prospects and spend the money on slightly older players.

This is where you've really had a shocker. You might find it laughable, but by definition this is accurate. This is how you know people like you are just bending over backwards to defend the board.

Of course they consciously choose not to upgrade the squad. They have £72m in the bank. That means there is a conscious decision to not upgrade the squad, unless you seriously want to argue literally no one wants that money.

Convenient that isn't it? All those arguments about the league etc. would look pretty weak if we weren't conveniently ignoring them. *, wouldn't that make oor Pete look bad? Thank * for that.

Let's just handwave it away by saying something meaningless about benchmarks.

    What?

What's this nonsense about benchmark definitions? Is that meant to mean something?

Exactly this, I don't know how people don't get it.

10 years - a decade of supporting Celtic in Europe and all we have is topping a EL group one time before getting pumped out by Bodo/Glimt. Oh, and we drew with Man City 7 years ago. How good was that?

I sometimes wonder when people will wake up and realise we aren't building towards anything.

Like I used to think we were back in the Deila days. Like we were waiting for the guaranteed UCL income and when we were selling players for £20m+ quite regularly. I thought we would push forward and move up a grade.

Instead we just made sure the profit column went up a bit and wasted even more money spread betting on young players.

I suppose we'll always have those draws with Man City..

It literally isn’t. :56: At no point have I said we can’t improve upon Greg Taylor or that we should 'continue with him for years because reasons'. You're making * up to give yourself something to cling on to.
Teams in Europe often having better resources and playing in better leagues is not mental gymnastics, it's reality.

Where have I said absolutely nothing needs addressing? This is tedious from you.
I've said there's valid criticism of the club/board and Lawwell. Not signing a left back to at least compete with Taylor has shown to be a mistake in my opinion. That's not a 'mad defence'. That's just acknowledging that there's more than just the 'Lawwell is bad' philosophy that the hard of thinking subscribe to.

    It absolutely is a strawman.
Nope. Try to actually read what I said.

I mentioned us occasionally being able to get Jota or CCV level quality, which we have done. There's also been occasions where we thought we were signings first team ready players and it doesn't work out (Laxalt/Duffy). We're not going to get it right every time. We don't only target young players to make profit on, and the history of our transfer windows shows that. We do target players we want to develop and improve to a level where they'll make an impact for us in the first team, and yes of course we want to make profit on players. But to think that's the only motive is naive in the extreme.
    Waffle.
It proves the point I made about a lot of our quality players wanting to move on fairly quickly. It reinforces the point I made about squad building being difficult for us because we are often losing players we'd probably rather keep.

    Waffle.

    :56:

    More tedious waffle.

I'll try and simplify it just for you. Our aim should be to win a European trophy, not just get to a European final and lose again.

The papers had mentioned rumours of contact weeks before. Ange done us the respect of waiting until the end of the season, it’d have taken a great opportunity to get him from us and reassurances that he’d be allowed to deliver the success in his way.

He’s found that at Spurs, as much as we hate to acknowledge they’re a bigger name in football than us at the moment, * they were included with the super league *. They have a setup, that is just waiting for the right guy to deliver success. Tried winners like Mourinho and Conte couldn’t, Ange will and doing that will be a legacy at the highest level.

Can’t blame him for taking the opportunity, it’s that ambition and surety in his own ability - which is genuinely world class for me - that brought us success and why I loved him. As soon as Spurs link was serious, most of us knew it was inevitable.

However he’s on record as saying the third team that went in for him, and he dismissed the others.

In that 20 years we also went into the Last 16 on 3 occasions, broke our transfer sale record quite a lot, have dabbled in many markets, and attracted a guy that would become one of the best defenders of the modern era to the club.

What we’ve been is too cautious and slow. And when we had a manager that made sure that wasn’t good enough we seen that it doesn’t need to be that way if we are competent enough.
