It's only highlighted more after poor results granted but that's natural. We've moaned about the recruitment side of things for how long now ? Even looking past transfers the way the club seems to operate as a whole we seem to be ran like a bowling club everyone just changed their job title it was still the same faces. Anyone seemingly new who comes in always has a connection to the club be it an ex player or a family relation (Lawwell, Strachan etc). The outliers to that rule were Dom Mckay and Ange also Kewell to a lesser extent but by and large there is always a connection.

Mark Lawwell apparently walked in to a job at Celtic with no recruitment process on the power of his surname

The way some folk go on you’d think Lawwell came back to deliberately harm us. It absolutely is embarrassing.
I’m not convinced the outcome would’ve been any different. Neither side has handled the situation well. The ban is harsh and collecting payment after the ban is also not a good look, but the GB aren’t angels themselves with regards to their behaviour at away grounds.
The problem is we’re always going to be putting out a fire somewhere in the squad, unless we get a bit of luck one season and all our key performers stay AND our recruitment goes well. A club in our position now sees our best players leaving after two, maybe 3, seasons. Young talented players who win in Scotland and want to move on to a tougher league. Jota is an exception because he moved to an arguably worse league but for insane monetary gain.

But in general the players we manage to sign that can play in a top 5 league, don’t tend to want to hang around in the SPFL for too long. Even players who split opinion (Starfelt) have chosen to move on. Losing three key performers to our side is always going to have a big effect on the squad.

Every fan wants us to build towards being more competitive in Europe but we’re at the mercy of players wanting to leave and forcing players to stay doesn’t benefit anyone (see the Covid season). What it really comes down to is that fans want someone to point the finger at. There will always be justified criticism but the “Peter Lawwell = bad” narrative is so tedious and over exaggerated.

Aye, player retention is an issue..

But the fact we didn't bring in a LB, is an absolute disgrace, without going into other positions.. our strategy seems to be to recruit lots of projects hoping one will stick.. with only Palma and maybe Nawrocki looking class..

I do agree it's easy to blame PL but if we have another poor window in January it will be difficult to argue against it..

In terms of the GB, Lawwell has said previously, give them enough rope to hang themselves.. so there's definitely a history there..

I actually agree with you on this Minty!

Lets get one thing straight - Peter Lawwell NEVER left Celtic. He is and was a major shareholder, so regardless if he was in a role as CEO or Director or no nominated role, he STILL had sway over decisions at the top. Fact

There's so much wrong with this.

Firstly - it's not an isolated result so please don't insult us both by pretending it is. It's an abysmal result in 10 years of abysmal results. The stats speak for themselves, I don't even need to reiterate them. To paint this as a knee-* reaction to one bad result against a good team is very poor.

Secondly - If we had performed better in the transfer window, the board / Lawwell / Nicholson / *insert here* would not be coming in for any real criticism. This is an unbelievably lazy argument. It's also irrelevant. It was a poor window, the resources were available to finally improve the team and it didn't happen. People are right to complain. It's illogical to say complaints are 'embarrassing' because some people might complain after a good window. It makes zero sense.

Even the manager is signalling his disappointment at the lack of quality brought in. It amazes me we're now 'embarassing' for criticising the the board / Lawwell / Nicholson / *insert here* even while our manager complains.

There has clearly been a policy brought in at Celtic over the last 10 - 15 years and the summer window was an absolutely outstanding representation of that policy. That policy has failed miserably, reducing Celtic to a joke in European football.

It is not embarrassing to complain about the Chairman of Celtic, who brought in that policy as CEO, with his right hand man as his successor, with his own son as head of recruitment.

We are well below where we should be in Europe. It is embarrassing to continue to defend the people that brought us here while their policies are still being executed.

You need to get your head out of the sand. This isn't a one-off result people are complaining about. There is no progress and no improvement. There is no intention to progress and improve over making ever increasing profits.

When should the threads be bumped?

Or have we just to * up and buy tickets and mindlessly support the team?

Should we tell Rodgers to stop complaining too?

That's the kind of thing Tory voters always say as well. "No point voting for anyone else cause everyone else would be just as bad".

Better off sticking with the * who has presided over 20 years of underperforming in Europe.

Aye, but failure to criticise the board for anything is equally boring.. something it's absolutely needed..

No problem with justified, constructive criticism. It's the brainless, stubborn 'sack the board' * that irritates me.

We also need to get away from the we can’t afford or attract better players argument either as justification for not improving in Europe.

It’s utter bollocks. If you identify players, pay the transfer fee and the wages they will come. You’re not telling me Taison et al went to Ukraine for the weather and quality of the league. He went there because they paid him enough.

Before the panty wetters come in with the we will go bankrupt or the way of the Huns. Well no you don’t if it’s part of an overall plan which links into player development, selling and spending/reinvestment.

If you spend 2 million on a player and sell for 10 million. To realistically improve as a team maybe you can’t directly replace that player with a better player but you can use the 8m profit to go and buy 2 players for other positions which improve and strengthen the overall team.

Rinse and repeat. What we do instead is take that 10m bank the 8m profit and spend 2m on a project in the hope they can one day replace the quality player that’s left. You will not improve year on year by doing this because at some point your luck runs out and the project player ends up being duff.

Except that's not what I said. I said the complaints would be the same, not the performance.

With regards to your first point, there is an Atletico Madrid in pretty much every group stage we've had. Basically a team from a stronger league that has a much easier time recruiting quality. We can't account for red cards in two of the games we've had in this group, which killed us at this level. We can't account for Maeda getting a literal leg hair on to the ball to make Palma's potential winner offside.

Your second point. If if if, it's always if. If we had recruited better. The argument from many is always 'JuST bUY bEtTeR pLAyeRs'. No matter how much fans complain about how windows should've been better, we've no clue as to why we failed but it's not for a lack of trying, given the amount of players signed. Folk want to buy 'proven quality'. Proven quality these days costs tens of millions and those same players can attract offers of over £50k per week in more attractive, richer leagues. No matter how much we complain there are simply a lot of players who are not interested in playing in our dog * league. The league we play in holds us back far more than any board members we have. If anyone disagrees with that then it's them that needs to get their head out of the sand, as you put it.

The competition for quality is more difficult now than ever. A decade ago Ange would've probably have been able to bring in Mitoma when he arrived and he would've been a hidden gem, but in reality the deal to Brighton was all but done and as we've seen players will almost always pick the EPL over us.

We sometimes get it right, sometimes we won't. Even Man United with all their resources can't always get it right. For us it's much more difficult, despite our frustrations as fans and Rodgers' frustrations as manager.

I've never said there's not justified criticism against the board, never. There is. It's just the constant demonisation of Lawwell that's embarrassing because he's viewed as an easy target; when in reality his tenure has also saw a ridiculous level of domestic success beyond anyone's expectations. I'd rather have the historic 4 trebles in a row over 3rd place or even 2nd place in a CL group. In an ideal world we could have both but Europe is incredibly difficult as we know.

A game against the elite clubs is always going to be very difficult for us with the players available to us. No amount of mental gymnastics is going to change that, sorry. Some of the draws we've had in the CL have been horrendous. Even a slightly more favourable draw is tough for us but despite results the general level of performance was decent in the first three games.

Always baffled me when folk claimed it was non-exec and he wouldn't have an influence.

It's quite literally the position Bankier had and we all collectively wanted him gone for his role in things. Baffles me folk didn't think lawwell, the control freak that he is, wouldn't hold a similar stranglehold on the club.

Others suggested even his son being there, would mean PL would want to see his boy do well and succeed, blatantly he's there as an easy yes man to daddy it would seem. Because whatever contacts he has in the game and knowledge of the scouting world, it's * honking if you take out the obvious Ange signings that Ange would physically had played a large role in.

Clubs a disaster under the leadership of this man and his minions.

What he's done in quoting as CEO and returning as chairman is the same as the likes of Putin stepping down as prime minister to then become president.
It's the same * in power, whatever way you paint it.
