It’s how you would expect a pub team to appoint a new manager eh. In fact, that’s doing a disservice to a lot of pub teams.

I actually get where he was coming from with that and sympathise with him (I would probably have made the same mistake in his place TBH); but there is no doubt it was a huge mistake and that he bears the responsibility for that decision at least.

Hes not the only one mate. Ta * does Dermot Desmond do? What do any of them do at board level other than collect their cash and turn up for hospitality in their wee suits on CL nights?

I actually don't think you would've to be honest.

It wasn't a mistake, it was a calculated power play. He wasn't appointed in the showers because Lawwell loves an emotional fairytale, he was appointed in the showers because the Celtic support were occupied with celebrating an historic treble treble. It was a predatory move by an empire builder preying on the emotions and better nature of a section of the Celtic support. He knew he was losing control of the club and needed to get his man in the door. The last thing on his mind was whether it was the correct candidate or not.

You're an honest person and wouldn't have pulled a move like that. You would've done some due dilligence and looked at the other candidates available, in detail (Ange Postecoglou was almost certainly one, by the way).

What Lawwell done with Lennon isn't spoken about enough. To say it's scandalous from a CEO doesn't go far enough.

How someone as demonstrably self-serving and conniving as that can sit as chairman of our board but still have so many absolutely 100% convinced he wouldn't dare interfere with the running of the club is amazing to me. That's the man's real talent.

Not sure how you can put a result like Bodo at Lawwell or the board's feet, like you said we're already dwarfing them for spending/budget so if we can't get past them it's on the manager, players and tactics surely? We were the stronger team on paper.

Landscape certainly has changed, specially when it comes to English football, then Spanish and the likes as well.

But we need to stop comparing and trying to shop in those markets, or shop as if we are part of that market and get on with shopping and buying players in markets that better fit a model for our size of football club.

4-6million back in 1999-2003 got you Lennon's, mjalbys, Sutton and the like and they was on 30-35k a year.

We now try sign players on 3 million and offer them 12-20k a week

If we do stretch to 4-6million, it tends then to be 20-25k we offer them.

Which works at times for us. But clearly we are not paying/offering a fair wage in comparison to before

The issue/desire the fans have now, is we know what level of player these prices get us.

We need to go spend the the higher end of that range (more 5-7mill) and offer them a fair wage.
Unfortunately for the money men at the club, that means actually offering them 30-35/40k a year and making them top earners at the club.

We just always seem to be wanting to cheap out as much as possible.

Of course it's tough to negotiate a player to sign for us when we are chasing 6mill players, because we end up offering probably 20k when they want 40k.

Second leg we had Ralston, Bitton, Welsh, Scales, Maeda and Forrest playing. You sure our team was stronger on paper? How much ya reckon they all cost? You think that's using our financial superiority?

It's not just that result.. how many champions league qualifer games have we played completely unprepared. 20 years of utter failure in Europe. That's on the board and PL

In the 2nd leg i think Ange knew we had no chance if we couldn’t beat them at home with a full strength team

I don’t think we should distinguish between the board and PL. It should just be laid at the feet of the board but I do understand some people have an agenda and write the narrative to suit.

That's even worse mate. We gave up against a club like Bobo. But yeah you are right we probably had no chance but to throw the towel in.. not a good look.

Don't want to get bogged down on that one result because it's an accumulation of embarrassing and pathetic results spanning over 15 years.

Totally agree and I said it earlier in the thread that he isnt the only culprit. Thread title should be Peter Lawwell and the rest of the incompetent rabble.

To be clear, I'm not saying you wouldn't have appointed Lennon.

I'm saying you wouldn't have snuck it through the treble treble celebrations without any due diligence on other candidates.

I remember Larsson was on about 40k or even more. Were the likes of Sutton and Lennon on 30k plus?

The appointment in the showers thing is something the fans seriously need to get over. :56:

Messi’s first Barca contract was written on a napkin ffs. It really doesn’t matter and is nothing more than a meme and a stick to try and beat them with. Lennon was being offered the job regardless of whether it was in the showers or not, even if it wasn’t a popular decision amongst the fans at the time. Lennon had done a good job managing us previously and did a good job after he was appointed, in the first season at least as he won a treble and got some good results in Europe.

I'm over it but I won't forget it. To be honest what was even worse than his appointment in a shower without interviewing anyone else was the failure to sack him when things went absolutely pear shaped under him and the length of time it took to replace him.

Again I'm over it but let's not forget how * inept they were and the absolute contempt they displayed towards us.
