I find it absolutely incredible you think all professional footballers have the same ability to score a penalty.

It is an ability, both mental and physical to be capable of scoring them regularly and thus we should be choosing the player most suitable for the job not just ask for someone to raise their hand.

    What's so incredible about it?

I don't see where the physical 'skill' is in hitting a penalty, unless of course you happen to be Andrea Pirlo!. If you took a massive runner at every penalty and put your foot through it the percentage of success would probably be pretty high.

Some of the greatest players of all time .. Maradona, Baggio, Van Basten, Shevchenko, Platini .. all missed penalties in high profile tournaments.

Mental ability? Yeah .. absolutely. perhaps some players that are more 'switched on' and confident can spot a keeper's movement before they hit it and send him the wrong way or lift it down the middle.

As for a player 'lifting his hand' .. MON openly admitted that he asked for a volunteer when Henrik had missed a few and that's exactly what Chris Sutton did .. lifted his hand.

But then what did that guy know eh?

Kris Commons for me. Took them at Derby, has taken them here.......would be my first choice. Everyone is going to miss pens on occasion though - it's just that we seem to miss more than our fair share.

    Failing Commons, then Hooper.

It has to be Commons, Brown and Samaras both failed for hitting pens the same way,Commons can hit with either foot which is a big advantage.

And then he took Sutton off them and told Thommo to take them. Also, you seem to be backing up Hammers point...

Commons will never and has never hit a penalty with his right foot.

Think we should give Charlie a go....have to assume that Brown has been choosen becuase he has proven in practice that he is best. If this is the case, then Lenny should know already who is next best and they should step up.

Brown took the duty on himself, Neil said he decided as captain that because our other more natural penalty takers seemed to be missing he took the duty upon himself.

He was basically taking them because he's got the baws to. Although every keeper has sussed out bottom right corner by now.

Voted for Mulgrew but him or Ledley would do.

Why Ledley mate, may I ask? Don't remember him being a penalty taker at Caridff other than in playoffs.....

I would think Hooper should be back in charge of taking the pk's.

It's a matter of practice, simple as that. Our team is playing well, so we can cut back on some aspects of training and put more time into penalties.

You cannot replicate a crunch penalty situation.

Hooper for me - first-choice striker should be competent at penalties.

Hammer said we shouldn't allow a player to volunteer and the part you have put in bold is me showing that some managers, such as MON think we should, so .. erm .. no I'm not. :97:

No he's not you're saying that every single player, regardless of skill etc should e able to hit a penalty, he's denying that. Some people just don't have it in there skillset e.g. Henrik Larsson. Martin O'Neill eventually demanded they get took by Alan Thompson.

    So erm.. You are.
