I don’t mind Bernardo and would take him for the fee being quoted. If he is our replacement for O’Riley though, then that’s a big downgrade.

My mad rants are based on several windows in a row of * weak transfers and missed opportunities. It's pure frustration and I'm scatter gunning it.

I'm firing at every area and level of our transfer process. It's all *.

Paulo Bernardo was not used and is negotiating his exit from Benfica

Celtic, the club to which he was on loan, is trying to agree on the transfer fee with the Eagles

He started training at Benfica Campus with the rest of the squad, but is now leaving. Paulo Bernardo was once again not named on the match sheet against Celta de Vigo on Saturday, in a situation that is related to the fact that negotiations are underway with a view to his departure from Benfica

I'll be happy enough to get him in, but will expect an improvement in his overall play if he features regularly. Deserves credit for his role in winning the cup final and his form around Christmas, but there were a lot of performances that were a bit 'meh'.

If Bernardo comes in then the odds of MoR going will be slashed. He is a downgrade so the midfield will automatically be weakened. The odds of us signing another midfielder? Prob zero.

I can't really agree with this. I don't think we are selling MOR because we want to and I don't think whether Bernardo comes or not will play any role in that.

I also don't know of anyone who likes Bernardo who thinks he would be a suitable replacement for O'Riley. I don't imagine Rodgers will see him as that.

Finally, it's highly unlikely we can replace O'Riley on our budget and in this league TBH. The best we can hope for is to find a young player who can reach that standard in a couple of years; and even that is easier said than done TBH. Given the last 3 windows, I'm not expecting an MOR replacement.

I think MOR is going as soon as a club meets our valuation and I don't think we will be buying anywhere near like like. We never do. Bernardo fits the model and I see him being a straight replacement in the starting 11. It's a downgrade certainly but that is how we run the team.

    This.

I don't really see them as comparable players. Some similarities, aye.

Bernardo for me is more of a workhorse and his technique is not as good as MOR. Granted the latter doesn't exactly slack defensively.

One bit I wouldn't agree with is I honestly think we would look for someone else to replace MOR and hopefully have options available. That's more hope than expectation, I think Rodgers would go tonto otherwise.

There's one thing a lot of people are forgetting in this whole thing as well, I think it's clear Rodgers isn't the biggest fan of Hatate.

Even if Bernardo was O'Riley's replacement, I'd be shocked if he didn't bring in another midfielder to compete with that other CM slot.

    An ideal situation would be.

    New CM/Bernardo
    Hatate
    McGregor/Lawal

Loan out Holm and Kelly (if he signs a new deal) and let Iwata be someone who can fill in when needed.

What evidence of this is there?

He played at the start of the season, he signed a new contract under Rodgers, he was injured for most the season, he came back from injury and played again.

It's a narrative I've seen before, along with him downing tools at start of last season and itching for a move.

Yet the actual evidence suggests otherwise

Guy is in prime position to kick on and be the next big thing for us. Has all the ability and is under a manager who can help him reach his potential. Mega excited about him.

I was saying I reckon he's about £3m, so £3.5m is a far more tolerable amount than the figures recently discussed. Happy to take him for that so long as we are also looking to replace MOR should he leave.

This is exactly how it works. We're not signing MoR of 2024. We're looking to sign MoR of 2022......

He was a useful player to have last season, and looks like he could go up a couple of levels. £4 mil seems about right. Keeping him makes a lot of sense. If O'Riley goes, we'll also need another midfielder of a higher standard than Bernardo. Hopefully Bernardo lifts his game and is able to compete well for a place, or at least be a very good rotation/sub option.

To move forward, we can't be replacing MoR of 2024 with the MoR that came in in 2022.

We need to replace him with someone at least in between, so that it's not an endless step backwards.
