Paulo Bernardo is close to finalising a permanent move to re-join Celtic this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The deal is now entering its final stages after the Scottish giants reached an agreement on the terms of a £3.5million deal with Benfica.

Bernardo, 22, has agreed to personal terms ahead of a move back to Glasgow and a full agreement is expected to be reached between all parties this week.

The midfielder spent last season on loan at Parkhead playing under Brendan Rodgers and the club made his return a priority in the transfer window.

Bernardo came through the academy system at Benfica and signed his first professional deal with the club in 2018, going on to make 26 appearances for the first team.

A loan move to Parkhead was his first experience of football outside of Portugal, but he enjoyed a successful spell under Rodgers’ management.

After scoring four goals and providing three assists in 33 games, the winger helped inspire Celtic to victories in the league and the Scottish Cup.

He established himself as a key part of Rodgers’ side, with fears his absence would leave a large hole in the team following the end of his loan spell.

However, the recruitment team at Celtic made Bernardo a key target this summer and they have moved to snap him up after lengthy negotiations.

All parties have been keen to reach an agreement throughout, and the £3.5million transfer fee falls short of the initial £6million demand

Once an agreement is reached, Bernardo will travel to Glasgow to link up with his former teammates and undergo a medical ahead of the deal being made official.

Would explain why we've dragged this * out of this.

Longer we waste on this the less time left to go do other deals.

Less signings = more money in the bank = big fat bonuses

 

I do wonder, what are the stages of making a signing?

1. Initial contact, would you be open to selling X player?
2. Ready a bid.
3. Potential rounds of negotiating.
4. Deal agreed between clubs.
5. Arrange date/time to discuss personal terms.
6. Offer initial contract details.
7. Potential round of negotiations again.
8. Agree terms.
9. Confirm with all parties.
10. File relevent paper work.

And that's me ripping the * out of it.

Now consider we already had the guy on loan, knew the original price, knew Benfica are willing to sell, knew he was willing to come, had an entire * year to have talks about what a potential contract would look like, you gotta ask the * question, why is this taking so long?

Of the made up 10 points above, you could whittle that down to about 3 or 4 stages at best.

We've been at the final stage of this deal, honestly for about 4 weeks now.

Completely ripping the * out of it.

Even if we accept (and I mean that without any favour), we only do one deal at a time, this one really shouldn't have taken more than a couple of days here.

We really, truly, are a shambles of a club to deal with when it comes to transfers.

Suppose that’s what happens when you don’t have a recruitment department.

 

Bodes well for the other 5 or 6 signings we need in the space of four weeks.

 

Looking forward to getting this done finally, been a long haul for sure. Be worth the wait though, he'll rip it to shreds this season.

... So nothing has changed from three weeks ago.

 

If we are basing it off the time line it has taken to do this deal we'll be lucky to get 1 more in before the window shuts.

I'm giving it another week/10 days tops before Rodgers calls them out

 

Why do I feel as if I've seen this before????

 

Considering how long and the now widely believed issues that we only actively pursue one transfer at a time, it would seem likely we won't sign anyone else.

No other deals remotely seem to be at stage 2 yet, let alone as far along as Bernardo.

Havnt even bothered our * putting in a 2nd bid for Idah according to reports tonight

Kasper and Sinisalo came out of nowhere. Chances are we're working on deals behind the scenes. It's possible Fabrizio Romano suddenly tweets we're about to sign a player, like it happened with Kasper and Sinisalo.

 

I reckon he's away on Jota style World tour of a holiday before signing. Hoping the confirmation video has him sporting a stonewashed denim jacket, tash and mullet!

 

We just dragged our feet to get the signings in closer to start of the season, if him and Idah were already in we would of been expecting another few before start of season.

Typical tactic to thwart our excitement.

 

Just watched that Bennett interview!! Superb viewing... By the sounds of things I think Bernardo is on "Cargo ship number 3"
