The Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English | Date: 2008

sup·port·er / səˈpôrtər/ • n. 1. a person who approves of and encourages someone or something (typically a public figure, a movement or party, or a policy): Reagan supporters supporters of the boycott. a person who is actively interested in and wishes success for a particular sports team. 2. Heraldry a representation of an animal or other figure, typically one of a pair, holding up or standing beside an escutcheon. 3. (in full athletic supporter) another term for jockstrap.

"a person who is actively interested in and wishes success for a particular sports team."

Seems like you're talking * after all Walley.

If you disagree, you might want to take up your points with the people who approve of/edit entries to the OED. :50:

Sometimes you'll even find that many of the people who don't go to the games actually know more about the club and it's history than some of the people that do. You need to re-think that one methinks, it shows a distinct lack of depth of thought on your part; although I do respect your opinion and your right to air it on this board. :icon_mrgreen:

Walley, you're a * *. The people 'do have money' in Ireland? Excuse me?

Right, so every Celtic fan living in Ireland who has a bit of money should spend it on Celtic every week and, say, I don't know, force their families to make sacrifices? Get a grip. Football isn't everything.

I get to see Celtic three or four times a season. For an Old Firm match, for example, I'd need money for a ticket, money for flight tickets, money to get from the airport to the ground, money for a hotel if I'm forced to stay the night, etc. Obviously I'm in no position to do that dozens of times a season for other matches.

But no, of course, in your * up world that makes me - and many others - not real supporters. You're an insult to Celtic fans.

My * up world my local team are still around sice 1890 why??because we supported them.Tell us what happed Kilkenny,oh yes they went to the wall and why??Because the kilkenny people would not support them.:97::87:

Your a disgrace as an Irishman, football in ireland in the 70s and 80s was a working class game and was well supported now days folk have so much money they can go have a caviar dinner or whatever upper class west Brit munchies like you eat and do instead of going and supporting a team.Have some champagne *.

LOI not quite up to SPL, but...

I'd be at the Brandywell on a regular basis and I think Paddy shows flashes of brilliance but can go through periods where he looks uninterested. Not sure whether this was because he was playing below his level or just his manner. I can't wait to see him in the hoops and I think he could be a star.

Regarding League of Ireland versus Rest of SPL standard...I think the top 5 LOI clubs (Derry, St Pats, Bohs, Cork and Drogheda) would hold their own in the SPL and certainly be pushing for a top half of SPL.

See Derry hammer Gretna 5-1 on youtube...some class goals: Search for "Derry City versus Gretna" and see the montage one.

McCourt - in my opinion a a complete non starter. It seems to me that to many fans are excited because he came from Ireland and played in a league where it doesn't take much special to stand out.

Be honest if we signed a player from the First Division for £200k no one would care less. That is the standard that McCourt is at, at present.

I accept that he is a fairly low risk gamble for Celtic but honestly I predict a few sub appearances this season before he fades away without a trace.

Agree that he's one for the future, squad player this season probs, but here's hoping he'll settle and become an asset to the Hoops

think parading mccourt an exciting new signing is a *-take to be honest.
never heard of him before he signed and he's only played in a league of fairly poor standard. didn't see a queue of other clubs trying to sign him either.
he might turn out to be ok but he'll hardly worry other champions league teams.
expect more established names from a club of our size

I agree that you'd expect to see celtic sign players of a higher standard than Pat McCourt.

Perhaps that says something about Celtic's standing in European football? Punching above their weight but lacking the funds and resources ti cut it with the big boys.

As for Paddy, yes, he was a cut above every other player in the Eircom League. He's got a chance to prove himself at a higher level. All us Derry City fans hope he does it. He certainly has the raw talent, would need built up muscle wise, stamina wise, but unquestionably has the skill. As for there not being a queue of clubs looking to sign him, remember he turned down a move to the EPL to join Celtic.

Good luck Paddy. prove the doubters wrong.

This is probably the good old Irish self degradation kicking in, but the sheer fact he's from here makes me think he's no good. Or at least not good enough for the CL.

    A little observation.

At pre-season training a certain Celtic defender almost lost the head with Paddy when he continuously left him standing time after time as he could only look on in awe.

Paddy has told friends that he expects to only make the bench for the 1st few months but can't wait to take his chance when it comes.

By passing it to Boruc, you mean letting it go out for a corner kick?
