Caldwell was better than any CBs we currently have at the club or at least none have yet reached his level in the eyes of the player market. I have hope for Rogne but he is very inexperienced and Jos remains an unknown quantity as far as I am concerned. However, OD is dire. Thompsons chronic slowness hampers him big time which is a pity because otherwise he is not bad at all at SPL level. Loovens in flashes looks a great CH and then had complete mares. I think he is still to be assessed. With a useless defensive LB like Mulgrew I would be penciling Misun in at LB so that rules him out at CH. My feeling is Rogne will eventually be the best but I suspect we may see a Dutch pairing of Jos and Loovens as 1st choice. A pretty unknown quantity but far better than the OD-Thompson pairing last season, surely one of the worst pairings in our history.

aye he has showed it down in england, giving away penalties, goals, getting sent off, and making a fool of himself.

He has done it for us and scotland as well. the gut can pass a ball, but hes not as good as he thinks he is.

I agree. He was our best player for two seasons, he became captain of Celtic and Scotland and is now about to play his 2nd season in the EPL. None of the rest left at the club could dream of that CV. They are just not on that level. O he was not perfect and he had a really shaky last half season when he was unsettled but he is a far better player than given credit for. He was very unusual for a CH in that he drove our entire passing game like a CM too. Would have been amazing as the spare man in a back 3. Aw well he is gone now but unlike some of our dafter fans I wish him and nearly all our ex players well and look out for how they are doing.

MCMANUS WON 3 IN A ROW

CALDWELL WON 2 IN A ROW

LOOVENS came, Rangers a re now going for 3 in a row.

Coincidence???????????????? Is it *. Loovens is a disaster. Would rather have Scheidt or Tebily at centre half than that useless *

Glenn Loovens is a better player than Captain Calamity McManus and Bombscare Caldwell. Loovens had to play with one or the other Chuckle Brothers during both Strachan and Mowbray's tenure, and was made to look bad due to McManus and Caldwell's horror shows. Everybody goes on about Miller getting the better of Loovens, but conveniently forget that it was McManus that let these balls bounce in the first place, when any good centre half would have cleared them first time back into the opposition's half.It is no co -incidence that Loovens has begun to look the cultured and composed centre half he is since those two loons McManus and Caldwell have been sent packing. And it no surprise either that Cardiff City's manager Jones wants Loovens back, because he knows just how good a centre back Loovens actually is.We have seen the best of Loovens during these tour games in America when he has been played with Hooiveld and Misun, and it would be a big mistake to let Glenn go imo.

Caldwell had a very good spell with us (with *-ups along the way) but that doesn't mean he was a very good player.. Both him and Mcmanus had fallen way off the best form they showed for us domestically and in Europe which is why they had to go because I don't think either would have gotten new contracts regardless of who was the manager.. His passing at times was outstanding but still a limited player who never convinced in defence or midfield because you knew the next error wasn't far away.
I really don't see Caldwell doing anything special in the remainder of his career and like Mcmanus , the heady days of captaining their country are over.. Either will do well to get their Scotland place back but one thing I feel sure off is they will never partner each other in a competitve Scotland international again.. The fuss that Caldwell was given after rave reviews for his first couple of Wigan games soon died away as they realised this guy is as likely to score an OG or get sent off as he is to play well.. Hit and Miss mainly due to his slow reactions..
I much rather have guys like Rogne and even Thompson who stand a couple of yards off their marker so they have options to turn , or to go through the back of the player to win the header legally.. Caldwell played so tight to a players * at times that the only options were to foul when trying to win the header , foul as the player tried to turn him , or tackle from the back and give away a foul..

Amazing as a spare man in a back 3 ? how does that spare role work then..

Still fresh in my mind from last season.. Our captain marvel.. [IMG]

I'd sell Looovens in a heart beat, and O' Dea quicker than that. I will reserve judgement on Jos, Rogne and Misun but they did ok during the couple of games we have played so far. we still need a commanding influence in that position though.

celtic cant afford a defender that wont make mistakes (in fairness every player does) but caldwells still a lot better than what we have and certainly was a player deserving of £20,000 per week.
