This will definitely be one that could of been, huge potential.

 

Not really. When big clubs bite one after another, that means he has too much potential for us to have him.

 

When we were first linked in September I think we would of had a really good chance but he kept building hype and an attacking midfielder wasn’t top of the list just now for us. Then he obviously started getting scouted a lot more.

 

Pretty much this. Him and Arda Guler from Fenerbache were making the biggest waves.

When you see who was meant to be we had no chance, Benfica, Barca, Dortmund amongst others. Salzburg played a master stroke when they got Haaland a couple of seasons back, only kept him a very short time made a reasonable but probably undervalued return initially to Dortmund but got a big sell on, so got a massive pay day when he went to Man City.

The fact Haaland has done so much in the game means they can sell they to elite prospects and compete with the big teams and leagues, for talent. They won’t hold them long but make money that helps fund the core project of bringing through their own young talent from Africa and other Central European leagues and sell to Germany.

 

I don’t really buy that. If he had went to Barcelona, Dortmund or Monaco then, yeah. You accept that you were never competing with them. He didn’t though. He went to Salzburg. We should be competing with Salzburg for players.

Players want to be sold the dream and they may look at a Haaland. We have our own unique story in Van Dijk. We’ve had many players go and perform.

I can understand that we have a long way to go before we start to challenge the Portuguese clubs and Ajax with our model of buying cheaper and selling higher. However, we should be trying to catch up with Salzburg and Club Bruges. At the very least, we should be trying to get up to their level in the next 5 years and to do that we need to be in the mix for these young players coming through.

 

We’ve been very quick to get our guys in before anyone else wants them. Or, certainly before anyone makes it official.

We’ve been linked with him a good few months now and Salzburg are only just signing him. It’s a good move for him, no doubt. We would have been a good move for him too. Ange could have worked wonders with him.

 

While I'd have liked us to go for him at least he's going somewhere he can develop with first team football and not just rot in an academy somewhere. It's a good career move for him.
