On this day in 1995 Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the 30th time through a goal from Pierre van Hooijdonk against Airdrie

 

IT was 132 years ago today, on May 28, 1888 that a crowd of 2,000 braved a chilly evening to watch the newly-formed Celtic Football Club take on the established side from the South Side at the first Celtic Park - or where the housing estate now are on Springfield Road.

The site is now marked with a commemorative plaque unveiled by the Celtic Graves Society, when Celtic legends Jim Craig and Paul McStay were the guests of honour.

Back in 1888 the Celts took to the field in their original outfits of white shirts with green collars with a red and green Celtic cross on the breast as they recorded a win in their first ever game against a side who were to become their greatest rivals.

The game was won 5-2, with the honour of scoring Celtic´s first ever goal falling to Neilly McCallum who, just nine months later, would also score Celtic´s first Scottish Cup final goal.

The Scottish Umpire of the day said that Celtic played with 'a combination which could scarcely have been expected form an opening display. It would appear that the newly-formed Glasgow club, the Celtic FC, has a bright future before it. At any rate, if the committee can place the same eleven on the field as opposed Rangers last Monday evening, or an equally strong one, the Celtic will not lack for patronage or support.'

They certainly got that right and it´s thought that the 2,000 attendance could have been greater but for the International Exhibition taking place the same day in the West End.

The only surviving remnant of the 1888 International Exhibition is the Doulton Fountain, the world's largest terracotta fountain and it now takes pride of place outside the People's Palace in Glasgow's East End.

We like to think that a rather more authentic, focal and indeed international legacy of 1888´s Industry, Science and Art Exhibition still survives today just along the road a little deeper inside the East End.

 

On this day, Celtic's Pat Bonner and Chris Morris played for Ireland in a 0-0 draw against Egypt in Palermo in the second match in the group stage of Italia '90.

On Tuesday 17th June 1902 Celtic beat Rangers 3-2 after extra time to win a trophy known variously as the British League Cup, the British Championship Cup, the Exhibition Trophy or the first Coronation Cup. Celtic, Rangers, Everton and Sunderland competed for the prize.

 

On this day 40 year ago Celtic beat Diosgyor miskolc 6-0 and also a legend was born! Chick pea Tommy entered this * up world! Should have backed us to do the same on the game few nights ago for nice we bonus.

No one could have imagined what was to come in the second half with the score 0-0 at half time.

With the game played in winter conditions in August with heavy rain, Celtic ran riot in the second half to make the second leg a formality after the Hungarians totally collapsed as McGarvey at last shows the form that made Celtic pay £250,000 for him.

In 3 minutes young Bonner made a fine save from Gorgei after a slack pass back from McAdam let the Hungarian forward in.

In 27 minutes McGarvey scored but the goal was correctly disallowed for handball against McCluskey.

The DVTK keeper had looked nervy and in the second half the goals flew past him.

1-0 - McCluskey's cross was spilled by the keeper and McGarvey swept in a low shot.
2-0 - McCluskey headed in a Sullivan cross.
3-0 - McGarvey scored after a run and cross by Burns.
4-0 - Sullivan's shot was blocked on the line and McGarvey swept in the rebound.
5-0 - Brilliant goal after a sweeping MacLeod - McCluskey move and Sullivan drives home a low shot.
6-0 McCluskey scores with another header.

Inexperienced keeper Pat Bonner earned rave reviews after a fine display and several good saves.
