    • Celtic were founded by an Irishman.

    • The majority of our fans are part-Irish.

    • We fly the tri-colour at matches.

    • Celtic is strongly linked with the Catholic faith, mainly down to the influx of Irish Catholics when the club was founded

    • Celtic's main shareholder is Irish

    • Our stadium is in Scotland

    • We play in the Scottish League

We're Scottish as well as Irish.

Could a mod perhaps split the thread into a new one regarding that issue those two are talking over as the threads really gone off on a tangent.

I don't think there's a set answer, and certainly nothing to "accept," I feel we have deep roots in Ireland and Scotland, and would describe us as a Scottish as well as Irish club.

Sorry Soup, and you're right, I won't post here again.

If we don't go to EPL then we must get a european league on the go in the next ten years because the SPL is a farce, the highlight of every Celtic supporters season is the CL and the odd game against the Huns. Otherwise we play teams that don't even attack us when we play at their home grounds the gulf in class is so wide. To add the fact that the people running the SPL can't even manage a fixture list without it looking flawed and half the teams in the league could be out of buisness in five years time, who knows what the future holds! This credit crunch is still to have a proper effect on football and it may lead to a few going under.

if we played in england we'd be seen as and play under an english flag and that i won't have .

I would be content if we could start mabye a british cup or sumthin. do not want to play in an EPL2 non-starter for me :38:

I agree with cat123. The competition in the SPL is the bain of our existence, there's no two ways about.

All supporters hold our tradition dear, so trumpeting it as a reason to stay in the SPL, plus decrying money/glory-chasing, is going to resonate to an extent with a lot of people. However, I'm looking at the poll and 70% of voters here favor it- bear in mind we're all pretty much die-hards. I think if you polled every single person that considered themselves a Celtic supporter, the number might be closer to 90% (of course one can only speculate).

At the end of the day, I don't think it's necessarily an either/or proposition. Our identity IS our club. If the majority of supporters thought we'd lose it with a move to the EPL, a majority of fans would oppose it. As we know, "football without fans is nothing." I firmly believe we only lose our identity when our fans give up on it, not based on logistics. After all, the club's location in Scotland hasn't meant the eradication of our Irish roots, has it?

I think we should be staying in Scotland, personally the scottish league needs shook up not the english. Mabey up the league till say 18 teams without meeting each other 4 times a season would add a bit more excitement, even though that would mean giving up two derby days:54: it would be worth it.

Why should we want to give up european football and play against England's 'lower' teams. Being a scottish club is hard enough to sell to top players, becoming a mediocre english team would be worse. However if it was an invite into the top division i would love to see it, unfortunatly i don't think it will be.

Because it would be much better for Celtic. As much as I hate to say it, the current crop of players, bar one or two, we have would struggle to get a regular start for the majority of teams in the EPL, La Liga, Sierra A etc. Staying in the SPL will see us go down the drain, both financially and in the standard of team we field. This isn't the clubs fault, it is simple economics. Our TV revenue pales in comparison to even the diddy EPL clubs, and we are suffering and under-performing in Europe because of the diddy league we play in, and the diddy revenue playing in that league generates us.

I would rather we went down to the EPL, using the extra revenue we will get from TV rights and whatnot re-build and restructure the squad. Due to the high exposure we will generate playing in the EPL, we will become much more attractive toward super-rich investors, who will put money into the club. Players of the highest calibre will want to join Celtic again: they are playing in, arguably, the best league in the world, AND we will be able to afford their wages.

Ok, we may have a poor first few seasons but a club of our stature would flurish, so that after maybe 5 years we can have a real pop at getting a C.L place, and if we are good enough to gain a C.L place in England, we can realistically expect to reach the last 4 of the competition; not as some fantastical dream, but as a realistic start-of-season expectation.

so in reality its only money and buying players you care about and not all the other stuff we must look at aswell?

The only thing guarenteed out of that is the extra money, if we lower our club from the best in scotland to the likes of say nottingham forest we wouldn't even be able to hold on to Samaras, never mind the decent players who we would need to move up i.e. boruc, mcdonald mcgeady etc. Why would they want to stay and play at the lower level of english football when they could be in the league above us?

We have built the best club in scotland and now england expect us to throw it away to help out their smaller teams generate some more money. I would be for this if we went staight into EPL 1 but it's clear where the invite intends us to play.

I'm still undecided about this - not that I think it's going to happen anyway - but I am a wee bit alarmed about the unbridled positivity the majority of us seem to have for this idea. I think there is more to this and we should be more cautious. Don't get me wrong I am excited at the thought of competing against Man U and Liverpool and the possibility of signing players who are currently out of our reach but here are some of the problems I see with the proposal (despite it being a total non-starter imo).

    1. We all seem to think that we'll go down there, romp EPL2 and then steadily progress up EPL1. Things very rarely pan out that way in life and it is naive to think it will happen for us. We could become stuck in the lower league, with no European football, for longer than we would all hope.

    2. We are used to having political might in Scotland. If we moved we would have very little political oomph down there. It seems likely that we would get the * end of the stick down there, as we are the new boys/interlopers. I can see other clubs ganging up on us and the huns, in a political sense.

    3. Hooliganism. I think it would be an issue and we know who the English will blame - us and the huns. And they will lump us in with the huns.

    4. Even if we got to EPL1 it seems obvious to me that the English will not want a Scottish club winning their league. Again, I would expect the politics to work against us.

    5. If we made the EPL1 in order to compete at the top we would have to take on enormous debt despite the tv money. How much would we have to spend to compete with Man U and Chelsea ? At the same time we are all quick to point out that the bubble has to burst for the EPL soon - and that the consequences are dire for them when that happens, so why do we all want to put ourselves in that position ?

As I say it does excite me but we really need to think this through.

If this ever did come to fruition then I'm sure everything would be analysed in as much detail as possible before a decision would be reached.

In the modern game, all the "other stuff" comes with money. Players, trophies and success.

We need money before we can consistently achieve the best we can achieve.

while i agree that we need the money and higher standard of play, everyone should realize that the likes of tottenham hotspur have cash and they suck
