NEIL LENNON is adamant that the current Celtic side can succeed where the class of 2004 failed and leave the San Siro with a dream result tonight.

The Hoops captain is the only survivor from the team that lost 3-1 to the Rossoneri two-and-a-half years ago, but sees signs that this more youthful Celtic side has the ability to match AC Milan and reach the last eight of the UEFA Champions League.

“The team in 2004 was older and far more experienced,” said Lennon, as he spoke at the pre-match press conference.

“But there’s a great verve in this side and there’s great character. We’ve defied the odds time and time again and while, it’s a big ask tonight, these boys have proved themselves and there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.”

Back in 2004, Celtic came within two minutes of leaving the San Siro with a deserved draw, only for Pippo Inzaghi and Andrea Pirlo to salvage a win for Milan with two late goals.

As he reflected on that experience, Lennon talked about the need for constant concentration throughout the 90 minutes. As many of Celtic’s SPL opponents from this season will testify, it’s never too late in a game to score.

“On that night we played very well, but we conceded two goals in the last two minutes and it was hard to take,” said Lennon.

“There’s no guarantee that something like that won’t happen again, but we’re well prepared. The boys know that at this level, you have to concentrate for 92, 93 minutes.

“We had a good look at Milan in Glasgow and while it will be a different match tomorrow night, we’ve met every challenge we’ve faced head on.

“This side has come through a lot and we’re all looking forward to this test. It’s an exciting time and the boys will relish the challenge.

“We’re just going into the game in the right frame of mind and we’re confident that we can come away with a positive result.”

Tonight’s match with Milan will mark Lennon’s 26th UEFA Champions League appearance for Celtic and the captain insists he relishing every minute of this latest European adventure.

“In terms of my own position, I’m really enjoying things,” he added. “If you’d told me three years ago that I’d be playing in the last 16 of the Champions League at the age of 35, I wouldn’t have believed you.

“I thought my Champions League days were over. It’s been a great ride so far and the further you progress in the tournament, the more you want success.”

Players will wear black arm-bands tonight in memory of the fan who got nocked-down last night.

Surprised Telfer's playing though. Thought WGS would have played Wilson.

we gotta be patient :celt_2: ..... and get more strikers on ... more attacking play
