I made a thread not so long ago in anger with Strachan's tactics and the way we are conceding goals. I realise that we should back the manager all the way up until he decides when it's his time to leave...I mean what good does it do apart from giving the huns the satisfaction :38:

However, I do fault him on one occasion and that is the zonal marking. Half time in the game just now and once again we concede a goal from a set piece! I really don't see the benefits of this tactic, Rafael Benitez uses it at Liverpool and loses identical goals to us.

Therefore I say the Zonal Marking should be scrapped, Strachan should stay and lets hope the title remains in paradise for years to come :50::celt_2:

I'm surprised Caldwell hasn't turned round and said to the team, "* Strachan, let's do proper defending"

Both systems have their pros and cons but someone should have cleared the ball before it got near Invincibile, doesnt matter what system you talk about, the ball should have been dealt with and not missed by 3-4 players

I'm not convinced that was Zonal marking at fault. I suspect it was a failed Man MArking attempt with O'Dea looking especially culpable.

Doesn't matter if it was Zonal or not (seems to be some kind of fashionable criticism of any team looking weak at corners) O'Dea shouldn't have let Invincible drift like that.

if he was man markiing and not zonal he probably wouldnt have let him drift. i mean how are they supposed to know who to pick up?? Very very flawed tactic

Thats crazy - O'Dea was ball-watching simple as. He had noone in front of him and a man clear behind him. You think he let his man go because of the system? Did he turn round and go, I might mark him but goddamnit I'm sticking to the system. No he * up.

    Unless he was ball watching....

Zonal, you pick up whoever is in your space. Man marking, you mark whoever whereever he goes which is easy to drag someone out of position altogether

still think man marking is alot more solid. zonal is very suspect and has caught us ball watching so many times. u cant honestly say u like or prefer that system

Don't like zonal marking at all. As it involves the defence moving with the ball and not the player, it is far too easy to find space in the box and that is a basic flout of basic defensive principles.

As a keeper, I really dont feel confident with it in front of me because of that.

No not at all but I'm not convinced by a total man marking system either.

Maybe a mixture or just better organisation, concentration and communication with the current system would work.

This isnt a case of one system wrong and one system right as both have their strengths and weaknesses

Scott Booth likes to make a fuss of it, that's his opinion.

My opinion is that were top of the league because of it.

The old arsenal defense operated by zonal marking and they were reknowned for their defence but again they would testify to being well drilled in this system

They had a Tony Adams taking up half the box on his lonesome.

If your good at it, go for it. Problem is most teams - Celtic included - aren't.

That too, this is not the time to be overhauling defensive systems, just be better at the one we are currently using.

GS has someone that analyses matches so if there is an obvious problem, no doubt they'll tweak it until its hitting the sweet spot again.
