Hopefully we still sign a younger keeper too to eventually take over

 

I’d be happy with Schmeichel

 

Statistically he was one of the top performing goalkeepers in the Belgian league last year in terms of shot stopping he prevented over 14 goals, conceding 31 against an xG faced of over 45. That’s good going by any standard of goalkeeping.

His passing accuracy for both short and long balls was good also.

As you would expect from an older keeper he doesn’t sweep much and it seems like he doesn’t come for high balls much which is a bit of a worry.

In terms of leaving Anderlecht he decided that and was offered another contract which he decided against.

Again totally based on Stats it looks like he had a solid season at Nice the year before prevented one more goal than expected and save rate up close to 80% and good passing accuracy.

Obviously this is just based on stats and other than the Euros, where I thought he was decent, I haven’t seen him play much recently but preventing 14 more goals than expected across 32 games is exceptional shot stopping, especially for a team near the top of the league.

I hope we've spoken to Schmichel and asked him to be no.1, but to help train and develop his replacement with a proper plan in place for transitioning to the younger keeper.

 

I'd be more on board with these signings if that's the plan

 

Could be in the style of what Liverpool do with Kelleher. Give him the cup games.

 

what signing a proven a goalie who is still looking pretty good or spunking 5 or 6 Millon on a relatively unknown keeper?

 

Maybe actually doing a bit of scouting for a goalkeeper for a long term solution was more my thinking than signing a guy who is older than our last number 1
