Usually I would agree with you. Had he been moving to Aston Villa, who were also linked, I’d have agreed with you. Martinez would be incredibly hard to replace there and he would be going as a clear second choice.

I’m not sure that’s quite the case with Brentford. They’ve not been impressed with Flekken and he’s made a few mistakes. Think they’re still trying to find a proper Raya replacement, so he will have a genuine chance of being their number 1 within the next few months.

I agree with what you’re saying in general though. Yes, the premier league is a hard place to turn down but if you’ve got the choice between Burnley/Sheffield United/Luton and Celtic, I think there’s a case to make we could make our club a more attractive proposition for the players career as a whole. To do that, you need to try find a way to bridge some of the salary gap he would get at these sort of clubs.

I struggle to see the likes of the clubs above paying players over £60k a week, I really do. Especially players we would be targeting. If we could even bridge the gap to £20k, pay players £35k/£40k a week and sell them a better vision, I think we could compete. The problem is we have absolutely no ambition to do that.

Burnley and sheff utd pay 60k wages regularly now. Depressing I know. Luton maybe not so but at the same time there’s not a single player in that Luton team I’d want so definitely wouldn’t want to compete with them. We need to be modelling on the benfica/psv/ajax/even nordsjaelland model of buying these players before they then go on to be the premier league level signing

This is by far the weirdest window I've experienced.

Another update on what I've heard

The club were 100% sure Beck was going to be with them on loan this month with an obligation to buy in the summer, all our eggs were in the one basket with this one, there is no plan B for the left back position other than to wait until the summer and hope that some lower end EPL or Championship club don't throw stupid money at him. Nothing has changed here even with Taylor's injury, it's not long term enough to bring someone else in, club may look at a 6 month loan on the basis that someone of proven quality is available.

GK position won't be looked at until summer unless Siegrist leaves within the next few days, you won't be shocked to hear there are no targets ready to move for if he does, a young keeper likely to fill in at 3rd choice. Hart will go in the summer so GK will be a priority then.

Matt O'Riley won't be going anywhere "on loan" this month... Abada still might, interest in Lagerbielke should become formal before the end of the weekend

No-one else is coming in unless others leave, still very much 1 in 1 out in terms of permanent transfers

Beck is absolutely ideal for us and one I'm desperate to see in the door, think Klopp has shafted him a bit tbh. He's a long term option for us and I can deal with having to wait, bit not a chance we can go without at least a loan for the rest of the season.
