He got 10 goals and 10 assists in 29 apps first season.

11 goals and 11 assists in 33 apps second season.

Technically if you break that down per appearance, his return was 0.1 per game worse off second season for both goals and assists.

Include Europe if you want as well and it would be much the same, domestic cups as well there isn’t much in it.

I will reiterate my point. Jota improved with us every game he played. He came a prospect and left a super star. You’ll do well to convince me otherwise

Stats suggest otherwise. In fact, just watching him would tell you otherwise, because he was every bit as good first season as he was second.

If you bothered to read it, they interviewed the person who recommended Jota to the club and then we did our due diligence. The scouts never found him.

Agreed. It’s still the one position (along with Cb) that we have actually recruited reasonably well on paper

 

I only asked the other poster if that was the article he was meaning. I never said we didn’t scout him.

 

To be fair though @Idioteque, that article says that he was recommended by a scout who had coached him when he was younger. Did you even read it all?

It says a scout for the Celtic academy (who had previously coached Jota at Benfica) recommended him. Not that we went out and identified him off our own back.

Anyway, I’d agree that Jota in the second season was much like Jota in his first. He was great both seasons - didn’t think he’d massively improved after a year (he didn’t really need to).

 

Scouted when he was young and our scouts rejected him. The point is, our scouts aren’t finding the players, they are being dropped in their laps before they go take a look, this included Jota. You make out our scouts are unbelievable, take a look at Bernie for an example of wasted money. If he was scouted then they should be sacked.

Helena Costa was a scout at Celtic for a long time and very good at her job.

She coached Jota at the Benfica academy from when he was eight or nine years old and she recommended him to Celtic when he was around 16.

‘I was scouting for the Celtic academy when she said to me: “David, you need to try and sign this winger before he signs a contract with Benfica”.

‘I went over there a few times to watch him and met him and his parents.

so it says he was scouted by Helena and David Moss

 

Think the point is that we gave him the platform to be the player he is now. Right environment etc. Also he played more regular football and plenty of games in Europe so it’s undeniable he’s a better player now than when we signed him, even if he did have a slight dip in form (what winger doesn’t?)

In an ideal world the same might happen with some of our signings from this summer.
