isnt the flower of scotland a sectarian or bigoted song, as it is about fighting a foe on its soil and removing him from it , or is it just songs linked with ireland ,and ,if so ,surely demonising or censoring songs of an individual nation is in itself a racist act,
now, before the pc brigade pipe up, alot of songs are not sung by the support as they are pro ira, with the exception of the away fans who have been better recently, though on sunday blotted the copy book.
i myself sing f.o.s but dont associate it with celtic unless against english teams where it becomes relevant ,hearing it at a st mirren game,i would view it as provocative as its supposed to shame us for not singing scottish songs, which i would boo, as it is a retorical chant rather than st mirren fans celebrating their scottishness, further more i myself will continue to join in with the soldiers song to celebrate the links my scottish team have with my irish family tree, what is it about celtic and ireland that offends so many people in scotland.
christ just imagine the furore if we suggested that muslims stoppped practising their faith or cut all ties with their country of origin or told the mosques to stop playing cultural music or prayers as none of it is relevant to this country. as we are told one scotland many cultures.......(so long as its not irish)

There is an excellent book called "Celtic Minded" by Joseph Bradley, a professor at Stirling University which highlights the point Cavan is making. In any history of Scotland much is made of the contribution of the "many cultures" which have influenced our country's development. The many cultures that is with the notable exception of one. You've guessed it - the Irish. The Italians, the Chinese, all the various European immigrants are given praise for what they've done for their adopted country. While all these various groups are deserving of such praise their numbers and contribution was relatively small. Huge numbers of Irish have "crossed the water" for hundreds of years and, in spite of the downright, and open, hostility and bigotry that they often had to endure, have done more to enhance Scotland's reputation and contribute to its success than all the other groups combined. Yet do they get credit, are they thanked, are they even mentioned in the history books? Look very, very closely and you might, just might, find a small mention but absolutely nothing in proportion to their efforts. In answer to your question, Cavan, " What it is about Celtic and the Ireland that offends so many people in Scotland?" I believe the answer is very much a religious one. The only thing I can assure everyone is that the religious bias against catholics is not nearly as bad as it used to be and I'm talking from experience from a time before most of you were born. Sadly there is still a minority, and I do believe that it is a minority, who are living in the Dark Ages. As I said in an earlier thread I am happy to share an Irish heritage with, in public, appropriate songs and by that I mean ones which do not mention the IRA and, in the proper setting my rendition of Sean South is second to none.( My brother in law's version of The Foggy Dew is bettered only by Sinead O'Connor.) But you cannot ram them down people's throats, nor should you. Times have changed and we should move on.

The phrase clutching at straws comes to mind.

If flower of scotland was at all sectarian it wouldn't be used as a national anthem.

People get * off with the celtic/ireland link, because Celtic are a scottish club but yet you still like to sing another country national anthem? and sing other pointless songs to do with ireland... why, scottish club.

You would'nt get Man Utd singing the french national anthem would you? NO course not, it would be stupid as their an english team

And just as an after thought it's a shame that the St Mirren dj and fans were not so vocal when Rangers visited there at the end of October and were singing Derry's walls,The Sash, and other songs which actually are sectarian............shame the pie and bovril lads only get upset when it's aimed in 1 direction

And so far you have called my national anthem "irish *" confused the definition of sectarianism and failed to answer why St Mirren have no problem with Derry's walls and the sash being sung....So come on then Gerry McNee quit your * hypocrisy and make a valid point
