I saw this and think it looks reckless as *. Why the * have they not introduced neck guards yet?

It was a sickening thing to happen. Sad for the person involved and their family. It must have been an awful thing to witness live.

I'm one of the people that doesn't think it was a freak accident. I don't think for a second he's tried to seriously hurt him, but I think he's taken the chance to put a boot in when he had the chance with unintended devastating consequences.

Nah. There was zero intent to “put a boot in” as you put it. His skate clips the other player and it immediately picks an edge, and at that speed you cannot control your trajectory after that. I’ve picked an edge on * ice before and I’ve gone flying. Not at anything close to that speed either.

It’s a freak accident. Similar things have happened in the past, but the force at which he was hit completely severed the artery in this instance.

You can actually see it quite clearly here. The contact and loss of control. You can argue that he has to do a better job of controlling his skate, and I initially thought it was reckless, but I’m not convinced he can do much there. It’s just horribly unfortunate.

They say the current ones are uncomfortable and unpractical surely a Kevlar turtle neck would give some practabilty and protection

Should have been mandatory ages ago

A ridiculous decision from people who don’t understand the game.

Edit: I’m editing this as I think I was too reactionary at first. I don’t agree with the arrest, but I get it. I’d be surprised if it came to anything.

I am frustrated with the constant baying for blood around Petgrave from every man with an opinion.

You really think this was a freak accident?
Have to admit, I know nothing about ice hockey but struggling to see why he had to raise his leg like that.
Obviously not saying he intended to kill the guy but I think there’s definitely grounds for suggesting he intended to harm.

The police have said they have dealing with highly specialised experts in their field during the investigation.

Some professional players and ex players think there was intent.

He’s only been arrested which is absolutely fair.

The court case will be very interesting though.

Yes. He didn’t “have” to raise his leg. He couldn’t stop his leg. When you’re skating at that speed and you catch your skate edge in a rut, in this case following contact with the other players skate - that’s enough to throw someone completely off balance. And at that speed you cannot stop yourself or control your trajectory. He’s travelling at about 20mph.

I could find dozens of examples of skates being that high at the NHL level even. Just without the horribly unfortunate result.

I think when even the teammates of Johnson describe it as a freak accident that says it all. Have we seen a single professional hockey player throw any doubt on that? Sean Avery doesn’t count. If there was malice in it or if there was even the hint of intent they’d be all over it.

Who? Sean Avery? A man who has made a career out of being controversial? Who was arguably dirtier on the ice than any player of his generation?

    Very few have even commented.

The above is at a fraction of the speed of the Johnson incident, when Hughes was simply turning. If you lose an edge it’s incredibly difficult to maintain control.

I don't know anything about the sport tbh, but for a conviction of manslaughter they would have to prove intent, i think that would be very difficult to do ?

Edit ; Actually they wouldn't have to prove intent, ignore me. :52:

Canucks score twice in 12 seconds to claim game 1. It's been a while since they've played a playoff game in Vancouver.

Crazy ending to that game. We were outplayed for about 55 mins. Nashville stunned. And with their third string goalie as well.

Have to seal at home, as injuries are piling up and becoming a problem. Do not want to be flying back to Nashville.

Canucks and Nashville really cancelling eachother out here. 0-0 after 2 periods in game 5 and headed for the same scoreline after 2 in Game 6. Canucks just survived a 4 min Powerplay pretty comfortably.

I thought it was the Canucks best game of the series. Nashville are ridiculously stingey and gave them nothing for the bulk of the series, but they got it done tonight.

Oilers in the next round are a totally different beast.

Toronto - Boston game 7 tomorrow. One of those cities is imploding :giggle1: Toronto if they flop in a game 7 with that core again and Boston if they endure another epic collapse from 3-1 up.
