Come on mate, this is just rhetoric. People can be critical of Lennon because they think he is not the right man for the job.

Open season on Rodgers is the death threats and the suchlike not criticism for him leaving or performances as a manager.

People are bringing up that they think it is over the top criticism for calling Lennon “idotic” or “moron”. What if the exact same posts were present in the Ronny Deila thread? I’d hazard a guess that there will be but folk won’t call that out will they...

Surely everybody can make the distinction between Rodgers getting slaughtered for being the first manager in our history to walk out mid season after 2 and a half years, and Neil Lennon literally laying his life on the line to play for, captain, coach and manage Celtic over the last 18 years, only to get similar levels of vitriol for losing a football match?

It's not even a debate FFS

I think people can feel and argue that Lenny is not the best man for the job without criticising him, mate. There's a difference between arguing that we could have got someone better on the one hand and claiming that Lenny is a mediocre coach who achieved nothing at Hibs, whose record here the first time is overrated and who is a yes man who will accept anything Lawwell tells him, because he is desperate for a big job he would never otherwise have a chance of getting on the other.

As for Rodgers, I haven't seen any death threats and I don't condone that at all. Calling him a rat, a liar, a traitor, etc on the other hand... if the cap fits.

Edit: about Ronny- I love Ronny and I for one would indeed be defending him. Let's not pretend Ronny has done as much for this club as Lenny has, though. It's not similar.

Come on mate, apart from the first bullet point, all of this is either pure conjecture or nonsense.

You are proving my point in terms of emotion clouding the judgement of situations.

And if it is similar levels of vitriol, has anyone wished death on Lennon yet?

Honestly didn't see any death threats? Was it on here? There are a few darkly humourous fellows on here who I wouldn't put it past saying that but I doubt they were getting tooled up and heading to leicister :giggle1:

And what exactly is wrong with this? I don’t necessarily agree with all of that but it’s hardly open season vitriol is it?

I also have a fondness of Ronny but I was just using it as evidence that the type of language which is being lambasted here is acceptable as long as it is not towards Neil Lennon. You only need to check the players threads to see the fickle nature of over the top criticism.

Neil Lennon is not immune to criticism as Celtic manager no matter how much the “Celtic legend/death threats/media onslaught/15 years at the club” rationale is used.

I think the anger would have been significantly reduced if he waited until the end of the season.

For me, in hindsight, he left us at a point when we were in a very strong position with a double essentially secured. Waiting till the end of the season might have been better for him and his profile but would probably have left us in a tricky situation with a new season starting 3/4 weeks later.

I think I'm a good person to judge the vitriol towards Brendan Rodgers, because actually I don't call him any of those things you take exception to. I don't think the language towards Rodgers is particularly helpful.

For me, I think of him as Brendan Rodgers now. Not "the rat", not "Brendan Fraudgers" or whatever else: I don't see the point. Let him lead his life in the way he sees fit, it's genuinely his loss. Equally I don't think of anymore him as "Brendan" (c.f. Lenny, Ronny, Tommy Burns, WGS, MON, etc).

He's Brendan Rodgers, like Liam Brady or John Barnes. That's where he ranks in my feelings. He's not "dead" to me, that would imply an anger I don't feel. I literally don't care if he does well or badly.

With that in mind, I think we have to understand that some people still feel very, very angry towards Brendan Rodgers and that is reflected in their language. That level of "vitriol" would be extremely unfair towards Ronny, who did nothing to deserve it; but towards Lenny of all people, it is frankly bizarre.

Can't you see why someone like me might find that kind of language acceptable towards Brendan Rodgers but not towards Lenny? If you really look at it fairly, isn't it actually really obvious, mate?

Although TBF sometimes I think I didn't actually get over my anger towards him so much as displace it onto Congerton. :56:

Of course he isn't immune to (constructive) criticism but some of it goes way over the top.

Celtic Da post but we never used to treat our legends by calling them "* idiots" for not making a sub that they wanted.

I've even heard Tim's, since the manager last left, parroting the same * you read in the papers about his conduct and personality.

    It's not nice to see.

Rodgers left because he wasn't putting up with Lawells shenanigans and just looked like he wanted to get his own back. Unfortunately the fans were just collateral damage amongst it all.

It irks me how the board manage to avoid any blame in his departure and it's all his fault. He left midseason wrongly but he was left out to dry for those qualifiers and the Mcginn scenario.

I think the problem with your Ronny/Brendan or Lenny analogy here is I genuinely don't think you will find that the people in here that have had a problem with over the top criticism by and large are the ones that go over the top in the other threads either. Do you ?

I certainly stuck up for Ronny until and after he announced he was leaving and Rodgers up until the morning he left. You would also do well to find any reactionary posts of mine based on a Celtic player having a bad game or making a mistake so I am pretty happy my stance on Lenny is consistent.

I haven't wished death on Rodgers and echo @Random Review comments that he is pretty much just an irrelevance to me and I rarely give him a seconds thought.

The Lenny appointment has obviously split the support but like I have said a few times that doesn't bother me at all. However if I see folk making what I consider scummy comments it doesn't matter if it is this thread or another I may bite.

Disagree mate. He left us at a crucial part of the league season knowing that his departure may cause us real disruption and it was only lennon stepping in and doing a superb job that prevented a nightmare.
