Fantastic, cracking post Markey, I love it. I only recently joined this Forum, but this one is defo the best post I´ve read so far. Really helped me to cheer up a bit after our latest bad run and invited me to make up my own memories.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
Indeed your post reminds me pretty much of my own „Celtic History“. To keep it short: First time I ever came in touch with the Club was the UEFA Cup Qualifier v Jeunesse Esch (my favourite local team) in Luxembourg (Aug 10, 2000). I was 21, and Celtic FC was quite anonymous here in Luxembourg, esp in the countryside (meaning outside Lux-City) where I grew up.

Having enjoyed the game and the atmosphere (which was quite exceptional for Lux standards), I started going regularly to our local Irish pub in the City to watch the Celtic games. All I can say is I totally fell in love with the Club, I can´t exactly tell you why, was it the atmosphere, their unique support or simply the fact I just felt like being part of a fantastic huge family? Certainly all of it, and probably even more…

After witnessing the support, the atmosphere, the Green & White Party in Seville 2003, I just felt thoroughly dedicated to Celtic! Celtic FC was where my heart and passion had turned to, and now 9 years later and knowing about CFC history I can confirm that will never change!

My 1st experience at Celtic Park was in September 2004, playing Dunfermline and winning 3-0. Charlie & The Bhoys were playing at Barrowlands on Friday and it was a great experience altogether! Since then I attended more than 30 Celtic games, including 2 Old Firm games, the Hearts game in 2006 when Gordon scored his own goal in injury time, the 9-0 win v Dons last season, and a wee trip to Barcelona in 2008. Nedless to say, I´ve enjoyed (almost) every single second in what I call my 2nd home: Paradise!

True, we´ve been off form lately, but through thick & thin I´ll support the Hoops, and I´m very confident that we will bounce back rather sooner than later! Keep the faith!!

Hail! Hail!

This is one of the best posts I've read on this site and it truly brought a tear to my eye and a lump in my throat! Thanks for posting Markeyboy!

I have post the occasional positive thread myself (especially recently) but never my full story. Maybe I will one of these days...

As for now, I have every confidence that Neil will turn things around and that we will continually improve! Celtic are great and will be great again!

Thanks again for posting, a true reflection on what it is & what it means to support Celtic from a true Celtic fan!

Hail Hail

My family emigrated to Australia from Scotland when I was a snapper. My Dad had served in the British Army because he couldn't get a job in Barrhead or Glasgow because of his Irish name. I know things are different now, thank *, but that's how things were then. He was in the British peace keeping force in Cyprus, and once he left the Army returned to Barrhead, but still couldn't find work other than casual work in the tannery. It was a difficult time, with high unemployment, and the people of Irish stock, whether they considered themselves Irish or Scottish, were considered second class citizens, usually without knowing why.

So we emigrated to Australia. Did it on the cheap. Ten pound assisted passage. For any working class Glasgow Irish person, Australia is a very strange place. I didn't get it then as a snapper, and I don't really get it now, as a middle aged male. It's a littoral society, in that nearly everyone lives on the coastal fringes. It's also a materialistic society, with a void in its centre. The indigenous aboriginal people are the only ones who understand this country, but are still largely on the outside, despite the eforts of incredibly talented and dedicated individuals. I think all true Celtic people would have an affinity with the indigenous Australians. We'd understand their trials and their sorrows. They are a people fighting back from the decimation of their culture by Europeans (the English).

In my middle age, I attend mass, but find it difficult to really identify wholeheartedly with the Church because of its institutional sexism, and its terrible history of abuse. But, once an Irish Catholic, always an Irish Catholic. It's in your blood, and it makes you view the world in a certain way, with sympathy for the oppressed and disadvantaged, with identifying with those who struggle for an equal place in the world.

All my life, I've struggled with a sense of identity. Am I Scottish? Not really. I always get a feeling that they didn't really want us. Am I Irish? Again, not really, I've never even been there. Am I Australian? Again, not really. Because no matter how hard I try, there's always something holding me back.

The one thing I identify with, that gives me a place in the world, an anchor that validates me as a human being, is the Celtic family. For me, it's not about football. Although I watch the team religiously, and I love Neil Lennon because he proudly upholds the essence of what we are, flawed, sometimes damned, but always resilient, always proud, a light shining in the world, and I love it when we play well, and feel depressed when we play without a soul, it's the Celtic community that gives me something to hold on to. When I see someone in a Celtic jersey, which I do sometimes, not where I live, because it's a small country town where no one even knows what Celtic is, but occasionally when I go to Newcastle or Sydney, I feel a shock of recognition, and I always talk to them, because I assume this person knows something, has a way of looking at the world, that I can identify with. In a very real sense, this person is my brother.

Without Celtic, I'd be a piece of flotsam, rootless, forever wondering where I belonged. But, thank *, we do have Celtic, and this club is not about the players, who are ephemeral, they come and go except for the legends who embody the spirit of the club and the community, I don't have to tell you who they are, we all know them. This club is about every one of us, linked together for whatever reason, those whose hearts soar at the sight of a green and white hooped jersey.

Well, not that big unfortunately, as we´re just a wee country. Hard to tell how much there really is... Attendance in the Pub or at my home is rarely more than a dozen (might raise to abt 20 for Old Firms), but there are certainly a few more Tims around...

Hope you don't mind Mark, but I've emailed your story directly to the club.

Doubt much will come from it, but it resonated with me so much that I just had to do it. First time I've ever been compelled to do such a thing.
