An excellent post, thanks for finding and sharing.

I was in my late teens when he signed for us and loved watching Davie play - a wonderful player. Was standing behind the goal when he scored direct from free kick in 1985 cup final against Dundee United to equalise befor Frank McGarvey scored the winner.

I think I'm right in saying it was the 100th Cup Final and was the first occasion that a goal was scored direct from a free kick.... Another of my useless but true pieces of information!

:50: To quote Archie's commentary - "Never before in a Scottish Cup final has a goal been scored direct from a free kick, is this a piece of history...........IT IS!!!" :veryhappy: :62:

This was very interesting! I will certainly be trying to obtain a copy of Davys book, I remember well, Big Billy signing Davie, it was an exciting time when a new team that was to dominate up to the mid 80s was being assembled

If it wasn't an issue for Provan et al, it won't be an issue for Scott Allan, surely?

Me niether great read i'll need to pick up his book, one thing that comes across with Provan is when he talks about us now he really cares, he might criticise a bit more than others in the press but its cause he wants the best for Celtic, he was a bit before my time but my uncle says he was a great winger

No it shouldn't be and for anyone that makes it an issue they can * off being blunt.

Loved Provan as a player and his free kick got us back into the 85 cup final. Its as good a free kick as I have seen to this day. Privileged to have been there that day.

    The winner wasn't bad either

I think there's far too much being made of this to be honest. In recent years we've had a player in Kenny Miller who played for Rangers, then played for us, then played for Rangers again before a stint abroad then returning to play for Sevco.

    It's not the 1980's anymore.

+ Mark Brown, Steven Pressley, Barry Robson, Dylan McGeouch and Craig Beattie who all played for the hun youth teams, Pressley played a few dozen games for their first team I think and possibly Brown might have played for them as well.

I suppose it's all about scale. If a player is a fan of that lot but is just a football fan then having them play for us isn't a big issue. But if they're the full on, bigoted, DOB type of Hun then I would never want them at Celtic and would never support them. I don't give a * if they're as good as Lionel Messi, I still wouldn't want them or accept them.

Andy Goram for example. Great keeper he undoubtedly was but if he'd ever played for Celtic I would have been disgusted.

Pretty sure Andy Goram would have been as well :smiley-laughing002:
