BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | C | Celtic | West Brom deny Mowbray approach

West Brom insist that no approach has been made by Celtic to secure the services of Tony Mowbray. BBC Sport understands Celtic have offered Mowbray the manager's job vacated by Gordon Strachan two weeks ago, with compensation being agreed.
A package of about £1m would secure the deal, but a West Brom spokesman denied the approach

    Ditto.

I'm not sure what to think of him if he's appointed. But I'll give him a chance.

I hope this is right, I'm not keen on Mowbray.

I just wonder how much people are getting sucked into how "Celtic-Minded" he is?

I know he'll be always linked emotionally to the Club, and I have tremendous respect for him because of the love he had (has) for his late wife.
He has a huge heart, thats not in question, but I wish his managerial pedigree, and ability to attract players was greater than it is.

I dont think it matters that a manager could attract players. We could have Mourinho as manager but we still couldn't sign Deco who would love to play for him. Our maximum we could spend is probably abour £3m on a player and anyone whod need a big manager to attract them would cost more than that so its not an issue.

Reports in Scotland indicate that Celtic were close to announcing Mowbray as their new manager – subject to the two clubs agreeing compensation. But West Brom remain adamant they are yet to be contacted.
A West Brom spokesman said: "I can confirm that we have received no approach from Celtic regarding Tony Mowbray."

Celtic are keen to appoint a quick successor to Strachan who resigned a fortnight ago after taking the club to three SPL titles. And they would have to pay Albion compensation of around £1 million should the midlands club agree to release Mowbray and if the former Celtic player indicated he wanted to leave.
But West Brom have stressed all along they expect Mowbray, who has two years remaining of his contract, to be in charge next season.
Celtic were also understood to be interested in Swansea's Roberto Martinez who has since been approached by Wigan.
Owen Coyle has expressed his desire to stay with newly-promoted Burnley after steering them to promotion to the Premier League.
Motherwell's Mark McGhee, ex-Portsmouth manager Tony Adams and former Celtic players Roy Keane and Henrik Larsson have all been linked with the post.
Mowbray had asked his players to show loyalty at the end of the season and try to help Albion gain promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
It remains to be seen whether the former Hibernian boss shows the same commitment

Attracting players is a big part of it.

The Mourihno example is a bad one, because we're unlikely to have him as a manager.
But lets say for the sake of argument that he is, then its fair to say that the number of players who are within our price range who would want to come and play for us would be greater than it would be if Mogga was the gaffer.

    Agreed.

But I think our strategy will continue as at present, and we won't generally be pursuing the sort of established players for whom the status of the manager would be a big consideration. Our policy is mainly based on identifying talent in less-well established players - youth players and fringe players - because in doing that we can take advantage of our one genuine major asset - John Park.

As I was saying on a transfer thread, I think one of the main attractions of Mogga is that he knows JP well, and has a proven working relationship with him. Which is essential, as he is the prime mover in a lot of our transfers.

I have always had a feeling it will be none of the top 3 or 4 suspects. I have a suspicion that it will either be a foreigner or a unemployed EPL manager with vast experience. It is simply irrational to look at rookie and yo-yo managers when there are guys with 3 times their experience (and at a higher level) out there. There is still the neanderthal mind set that a Celtic connection is needed. FFS would you think twice about McGhee, Mogga, Keane, Coyle etc if they didnt have that and you were just looking at CVs of the best available or possibly available managers in Europe? They shouldnt even be on our first 20 choices. The board are treating Celtic fans like knuckle dragger who will be all happy because there is a Celtic man in the hotseat. I know there are folk like that but they are the past and should not set the agenda.
