We were not robbed for either of those players, their fees were a reflection of the league they came from not of their talent.

It's easy in hindsight to say we should have got more for both, the reality is we've only just started getting decent fees for our players in recent years.

If he did go for £40m, the most annoying thing about it wouldn't be him leaving, it would be fans thinking we can suddenly start buying 2 x £20m players etc.

40mill and I would just be happy to spend the half of it across 5 players.

Sell him to city for £35m + Roberts:celt_2:

But on more serious note, 2 seasons would be great, 3 would be better if he extended his contract. Realistically, can see him going for £25m absolute max, and if a bidding war happened between top clubs, would happily be proven wrong though.

Hard not to get carried away. Teams are looking at potential when putting a value on a 20 year old. He's scored goals in the English Championship at 18/19, then at 20 he's came here and scored in the Champions League, only in one game but he's only played in 3, and in big games against the new huns. They might be a poor immitation but still a high pressure match.

No chance will we get £30-40m for him but no reason why teams wouldn't be willing to pay £20-25m if he can keep this form up.

Big problem is, do you sell him or risk a dip in form or injury, or hold on to him and hope he eventually gets a full call up for France and his value rockets.

Any club in the world could offer half that and we're not in a position to turn it down

He could easily be worth £40m in two seasons. When he first arrived I was one of the doubters during his first couple of games. I said something like it looks like his mind is trying to do something his body can't but I also thought this could be a good sign as it could indicate that he was just finding his feet so to speak. Since then he's shown that he was trying to control the ball and turn with it because he knows he can and he's been improving in near enough every game I've seen him play. Even a simple thing like that nutmeg he made yesterday, that was a brilliant piece of improvisation and it shows he's thinking all the time.

I also love the fact he fights to get the ball back and often does which prevents teams breaking but also keeps the ball around their area. If he keeps improving his skills and his work rate and determination to regain possession remain intense then he'll be a fantastic footballer.

I think he needs to stay with us for two seasons though, help us win the league and qualify for the CL again because it's here he'll get to start in CL games and learn what it's like to play at that level. He'll learn quick too. If all things go to plan we'll qualify, get a decent group, have a stronger team and finish at least third and guarantee Europe after Christmas. It's not going to be easy but that should be our aim next season. If he scores important goals in Europe then he'll be worth £40m.

He's a special project so we have to turn it down. The deal is he plays for us and we develop him under Brendan and with a bit of luck we qualify for Europe so he gets that experience then once he's become a more established footballer he can leave to a bigger club. But we can't just let him go before we've had much influence on him. That would hurt him and us. Him because he's not starting CL football for any team that will afford him and us because we won't get to see how well we can develop the potential of talented young footballers with the rare resources we have, which are a talented manager and European football. How many other teams can offer such a young player games against Barca, City and BMG? We signed him for 4 years, he'll leave in two. Lawell is trying a new way of maximising our returns as our policy of selling top talent for profit remains.

    Exactly.

And if Ajax can get 30mill for milik at the age of 22 why couldn't we keep dembele for two years and sell him for that sort of money at the age of 22.
Ajax are no bigger than us, and also not in any position either to turn down "half of that".
They also just sold their top keeper for 10million. Just a nice point to make when we see what transfer deals we have done lately for our keeper as well.

Id love that sell him/loan him back scenario to happen.

If he continues to play even 6/10 by his own standards, we will do exceptionally well to hold onto him next summer. He is clearly very very good, and at that age, a great investment. Id imagine if he is wanted by any decent EPL team, he will want away/be talked into it by his agent. Footballers really need to tie themselves up on as big a contract as possible as early as possible in their careers.

If you are on £20k a week on a 4 year contract, and someone comes in offering £80k a week for 5 years.....you gotta go! Every player is only one injury away from the end of their career at any given time. He needs to secure everything he can get at this age. Obviously £20k is not to be sniffed at, but these guys are all checking out what others are earning.

Unfortunately i agree with those who dont think we will get anything above £20m. Maybe £15-£20 id say.

Why though? Why is he not worth more? Because we are little Cetlic in the little SPL?

We got this lad on the cheap and EPL clubs ignored him. If they really want him now they must stump up the cash.

I think he is worth more mate, but we are crippled by the standard of league we are playing in. Even Holland (as a few have quoted), have several decent teams regularly playing in Europe year in year out. Other than us, no team from Scotland gets European football past July it seems.....so those down South have us over a barrel a bit.

It was totally predictable Wanyama would improve and be a good investment for Southampton, and im sure Virgil will also move on having proven himself down there also. We have a glass ceiling in terms of how valuable players can be i think.

True - i mean ffs the league record for a (inter-league) transfer fee is Scott Brown 4.4m from Hibs.

That's true but if there was a bidding war between cash-rich clubs it could drive the price way beyond what you would expect. Still think £40 million is OTT, probably the Daily rangers attempt at putting extra pressure on him and raising some gullible Celtic fans expectations to unrealistic levels.
