    we got 10399 votes that round..... liverpool went through to the semi finals with 1055 how did our poll have so many? idependiente got 9049 which is more than any other team bar us got in both of their rounds??? they only got 154 last round ffs!

    1) People's club in Portugal. Sporting dominated the upper classes, Benfica was more of the middle and lower classes club, historically ofc. According to a recent UEFA study, 47% of portuguese are Benfica fans.

    2) Great implementation in former portuguese colonies, where many times portuguese clubs are favorited over local clubs.

    3) Emmigration. Being a reality for many portuguese citizens, there was built a considerable fanbase in some foreign countries, especially France but Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada or Switzerland as well.

    Lille - Benfica (2005) still holds the attendance record for a french club in Europe, with more than 40k Benfica fans present, according to UEFA:
