Like I said, steadily, McManus as a Celtic Captain only got 26 caps. Even the like of Mulgrew winning player of the year from CB.

The appreciation is getting there quicker than it is in England, it's the only plus point I think we have over them just now actually. When you see the likes of David Luiz getting crucified for wanting to play from the back.

Sterling and Chamberlain have a lot of potential. Chamberlain is in his "prove it" season for me though. Sterling is still only 18 and played a lot of games last season at 17, looks a good player but we'll only know when he comes to mature. He looks to have fantastic potential just now though.

A lot of the current English players Chamberlain just seems to be very pacey and not much else at the moment. Wilshere probably the most overrated English player since Joe Cole no doubt he has talent but not world class not yet.

I dunno about that, I don't think we've seen enough of Chamberlain to judge. Saying that, what I've seen of him Forrest has a far better goalscoring touch. Everytime I've seen Chamberlain with a chance he's flapped at it.

    people thinking Giggs is/was over-rated.
I wonder how much they actually watched him play
at his peak, even now he gets a game at a top club in the epl

I remember when he was about 17/18 he used to ghost past players
for fun,his biggest let down for a number of years was his final delivery.
If he could cross a ball at 17 like he can now, he would have been
for me in the top 20 players ever,& I don't even like him or man utd.
but to deny his skill, longevity at one of the the highest league levels
    & say he's over-rated is laughable imho.

I see a theme developing within this thread..............English players. Their media is totally to blame for this. They're so smug and full of their own self importance that they think their league is the envy of the rest of the world and their national team can still win every World Cup. Even when all the evidence points to the contrary they still peddle this guff and blow their own trumpet.

Everyone who isn't a St. George's cross waving moron can see that England are headed straight for a crisis as far as their national team goes due to the lack of serious young talent coming through the ranks. They've * in their own pool by flooding their top league with so many foreigners, they just don't realise it yet.

Do they really? I honestly think it's tongue-in-cheek, the serious journos like Martin Samuel laugh at the notion.

England believing they can win the World Cup is just a cliche trotted out routinely by their detractors in my eyes, the majority know full well that they've got no chance.

Sterling was pish, is pish, and will always be, pish.

I agree about the world cup thing, im tired of people bringing it up actually nowadays they realise they arent on the top level despite what the rankings say, in saying that in it wasnt that long ago when they did believe their hype, especially when they had rooney, gerrard, lampard, terry, rio etc all on top form for their clubs.

They believe it all right. Not outright 'we are definitely' these days but it's still there.

Wouldn't be wrong, would it? It's not like there's a reasonable argument for them having a chance when you look at other nations. A fair number of them do think they can win it, would honestly say it's about 50/50. He could have said that "we don't think next year is realistic enough, we'll try in 2018" but no, he really does believe what he said:rolleyes:

    I sincerely doubt that.

His last quote sums it up perfectly, how else is a major football nation supposed to approach a World Cup? Do you think Portugal will go to Brazil with a 'here to make up the numbers' attitude? I suspect they won't, and their prospects aren't measurably better than England's.

Wilshere has to be one of the most overrated. Arsenal fans go on about him like he's the next Xavi or something like that, when he clearly isn't. He's a decent player, but his creative passing isn't all that great, and defensively he isn't brilliant either. He's a workhorse though, I'll give him that.

See that's the thing, I don't think they are a major football nation anymore.. If they are, it's their domestic league and not their national team that makes them one. Look at their world cup qualification group - they are one point ahead of Ukraine, and behind the footballing giants Montenegro, who have 650,000 people, compared to England who have over 50 million people. They might end up in the play-offs for it. Their arrogance has been and will always be their downfall - I'm not saying all the English expect to reign supreme in Rio, but they always will have that prominent element with far too high expectations.

As overrated as he is he will still be important to England for many years, just tells you of how much they've declined

What former World Cup winning nation isn't arrogant in exactly the same manner? What former World Cup winning nation doesn't have a similarly biased and partisan press?

    Name one, other than Uruguay.
