Celtic were today attempting to put the finishing touches on a double deal for strikers – with the swoops being funded by the sale of Shaun Maloney and Georgios Samaras.
The Parkhead club are trying to rush through the transfers of Maritimo striker Baba Diawara and AIK Stockholm hitman Mohamed Bangura before the transfer window slams shut at midnight tomorrow.
It’s understood the £3m move for Diawara and the £2.2m bid for Bangura are at such an advanced stage that the pair are already on route to Celtic’s Lennoxtown training base to complete formalities.
At the same time, Maloney was heading south to conclude his own £2m switch to English Premier League side Wigan and Samaras will be granted permission to join Sunderland providing they get close to Celtic’s £3m valuation after the player signed a long-term deal last season.
Lennon has been desperately searching for new attacking options and believes he is short of viable options to play through the middle with Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes his only main front players.
Although he has persevered with Samaras, Lennon has made no secret of the fact he would not be playing first-team football were better options available to him and he believes that will be the case now if he lands Diawara and Bangura.
Lennon ran the rule over Diawara as he netted a last minute winner on Sunday to help his club defeat Sporting Lisbon 3-2 and that convinced him to request chief executive Peter Lawwell to provide the funds to land the player.
Celtic plan to offset their outgoings by selling both Maloney and Samaras after Lennon revealed neither would play much first-team football this season.
But one player he isn’t interested in losing is midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng after the club knocked back a £7m offer from Russian club Rubin Kazan.
Blackburn had earlier failed in a £4m bid for the player and Lennon is adamant he doesn’t want to lose the South Korean.
That would mean the only thing for Lennon to do before the window closes is find someone to provide cover at left-back until Emilio Izaguirre returns from injury with Dundee United’s Paul Dixon being mentioned as a young player the club could look to develop further after impressing.
A Parkhead source revealed: “The manager always believes he was short of quality in attack and feels that has been the case in certain games this season.
“He wanted two strikers and another central defender but he will have to sacrifice the defender if he wants someone to provide cover at left-back.”

AIK announce Mohamed Bangura sale to Celtic

The Swedish club say they have agreed a deal with the SPL side over the sale of their striker.

AIK have announced the sale of striker Mohamed Bangura to Celtic, just hours after it emerged the Scottish FA had given an endorsement towards the player’s work permit application.

The Swedish club have refused to go into specifics on the fee for the player, which has been reported as standing at around £2.2 million. Bangura has signed a four year contract.

The Sierra Leone striker emerged as a transfer target for Celtic over the weekend but doubts were raised over the deal on Monday, as the Glasgow club stepped up their interest in Maritimo’s Baba Diawara.

It is unclear whether that move will still go through but Neil Lennon has moved to ensure Bangura is recruited prior to Wednesday night’s transfer deadline, with only UK Border Agency approval required for the deal to be formalised.

Manager Neil Lennon and chief executive Peter Lawwell attended a work permit appeal hearing at Hampden Park on Tuesday, successfully arguing that Bangura was of the highest calibre and would contribute to the development of the Scottish game.

The 22-year-old has made just three appearances for Sierra Leone, ensuring he fell well below the requirements to be given an automatic endorsement by the Scottish FA towards a work permit application.

SFA criteria stipulates that an applicant must have played 75 per cent of competitive matches in the last two years for a FIFA-ranked top 70 nation.

Bangura began his career with Kallon in Sierra Leone before agreeing a loan move to Swedish third-tier side Vardamo.

Twelve goals in 13 games saw the player catch the eye of top flight clubs and AIK signed the player on a three-and-a-half year deal in July 2010.
