Mogga clueless in Europe

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by gunt, Oct 1, 2009.

  1. The only players that should launch long balls are the fullbacks, the wing midfielders, and occasionally the AM. When it's done from the wing, it shouldn't be done from a big distance, because the ball will travel long, and the defense will grab it easily. Crosses from within the final third, on either side are the most effective. Not Caldwell's punting.

  2. Same players apart from Dan Fox who everyone seems to say he is an improvement on Naylor .

Same players, but they played somewhat better under GS. Of course, Naylor was the biggest problem with Strachan's defense. But the CB-s were better back then.

  3. Loovens never played last night and i reckon he is playing better than any other CB did last season .

  4. Well, not putting Loovens in was a huge blunder from Mowbray. He's our best CB now, he wasn't bad last season. Last season, Caldwell was really good, together with S. Brown our best player. Look at them now. We didn't concede goals in the first 5 minutes under GS like we do now.

  5. its not TMs fault, he can only do what he can with the players he has. fact is we have won 1/7 of our last home european games which would suggest that it is the players and not the staff that aint up for the job. we just dont have good enough footballers at our club.

  6. too many Celtic fans on here should * off and support Man Utd.

What did Mogga do badly wrong last night?? Nothing, apart from not starting Barry Robson, which was understandable (and also a matter of opinion) instead of massively overrated Broony.

i cant believe people are saying WGS was a better manager, what a load of sh*t. With him he would have put in some random player, who he reckoned was better in Europe - like Jarosik. Or he would have put Caldwell in midfield again.

    Clown.

  7. Thats the bottom line mate, the team has so much mediocre players now, with plenty of them on very decent wages. As you said he can only work with what hes got, and hes basically told us the team isnt good enough when he said he needed another couple of transfer windows, which was refreshing to hear as it shows to me he knows who is and isnt good enough and I am happy with that.

  8. Hmmmm, care to mention the results in the last 4 home games in europe under GS?

  9. The last 4 home games was, in no particular order:

    Villareal 2-0
    Man U 1-1
    Aalborg 0-0
    ----------
    Barcelona 2-3

  10. That is the right order....
My point is that we started slipping in europe even last season, so to say Mogga is clueless is a bit too much. I know we won against Villareal, but everything was decided before that game...And last nigh I was proud of our performance in the second half, but dissapointed by the result...

  11. Don't let the facts get in the way of a good whinge Danni. :87:

  12. Its true that WGS's 3rd CL season was not as good but 1 win, 2 draws and 1 defeat is a lot better than 4 defeats a draw and a win AND also note that the teams we played at home last season were on average a better standard teams in the CL and didnt include Europa level teams. There is no way of dressing this up. Mowbray does not have the European knack.

  13. Actually other than drawing with Aalbog (and by * they were unbelievably lucky because we pummeded them) that was a great set of results.

  14. On the one hand you're just giving credit to Gordon Strachan for every good result he achieved and none of the blame for the numerous * ones he had.

On the other you're just having a go at Tony Mowbray for every game we haven't won so far. And I don't hear you giving him any credit for the good football we've played in some of the matches.

You also seem happy to blame Tony Mowbray when it was clearly individual player errors that cost us but not so willing to say it was Gordon Strachan's fault when Caldwell * up against the likes of Benfica and Barcelona.

You're only seeing what you want to see because you're still in love with Gordon Strachan. Or that is how it's coming across at least. :87:

  15. This is pure smokescreen. Other than Aalborgs fluke draw, WGSs CL home record is a very good one against seriously top opposition.

There is no way of deflecting the fact that 4 defeats a draw and one win in your first six Euro games is diabolical. I doubt there are many Celtic managers in history with Euro records as bad as that in their first 6 games. There is plenty of reason to worry and to suspect Mowbray doesnt have the tactical know how to win in Europe.

As for WGS, he lost one game and people still used it to hit him over the head 4 years later. He also won his 2nd game 5-0?? (canny remember exactly) and then gave us 3 years of European respectability based on CP being a fortress and that included 2 last 16s. That is huge overachievement that we could never have expected. BUT...people still harp on about Artmedia. I ask you. Sorry but 6 games in, Mowbray has a shocker of a Euro record and all this with access to much of the experienced squad who did a lot better in the last couple of years against a higher average opposition standard. Why? The only change is Mowbray himself plus a few changes in players he is responsible for.

My impression of Mowbray is very much like his Hibs and WBA teams. He plays free flowing football but he doesnt have the tactics or the cynicism to do it against bigger teams that are far better than us or even ones who are our equal. Basically he sets up in an attacking way that would require top class fast defenders that we do not have to protect the back from quick breaks. He is failing to recognise that we do not have such players nor are likely to be able to get them to come here.

  16. I'm not denying, and never have, that Gordon Strachan done well for Celtic in HOME European matches.

2 of Mowbray's defeats were against Arsenal. Are you really telling me that Gordon Strachan would have got us past Arsenal? If you are then I just don't agree with you.

You are also failing to explain to me how it is Tony Mowbray's fault when we lose or draw games in Europe because of individual player mistakes like Fortune'e against Dynamo and McManus last night. Mowbray can only put the players into the positions, if they * it up from there it's not his fault! I ask again.......when Gary Caldwell * it up against Benfica and Barcelona was that Gordon Strachan's fault??

You are also totally ignoring the fact that we played better in Moscow under Tony Mowbray than we EVER played away from home in Europe under Gordon Strachan.

Strachan = good Mowbray = bad is just far too simplistic and that's how you're painting it. Strachan's first European adventure was one of the biggest embarassments in the club's history. Why don't you just give Mowbray a bit of a chance instead of wading into him after a few games.

  17. To be fair to Strachan we did have some good European performances (away) that we were cruelly undone sheerly by luck.. Aalborg, Villareal for example.

Mowbray has been baffling me with his gung-ho selections, but I'm prepared to draw a line under it and assume that we're going to improve. In 4 team groups, beating shiters like Rapid at home is essential.

  18. Oh, now you are counting all Mogga's games home and away(1,1,4), Strachan's home games(1,2,1), that is just wrong...If you want to compare like that it should be 1,2,5 for Strachan...

  19. For me I never considered ourselves as serious contenders for a run in Europe in either competition, we are just not good enough.Sunday's game has always been uppermost in my mind with the end objective of winning the league and seeing entry into Europe next season with the money that will bring in. This will then give TM the means of rebuilding the team which he has repeatedly stated as his priority. The board have to know by now the fans total disatisfaction with their lack of support for the manager and will not dare to attempt a repeat .The league is the real goal this season and no better place to register this than on Sunday at the midden
