Celtic manager Tony Mowbray expressed relief after his side came from behind to beat Dunfermline and progress to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.
"There was some good and bad from us," Mowbray told BBC Scotland after the 4-2 victory at East End Park.
"At times today we looked very good and in total control and able to score at will. But at other times we let our standards slip slightly.
"I hope Celtic supporters can see what we're trying to build here."
Celtic took the lead through Diomansy Kamara but quickly found themselves 2-1 down following goals from David Graham and Andy Kirk.
Morten Rasmussen equalised just before half-time and the visitors improved after the break following the introduction of Robbie Keane.
Keane scored from the spot and Calum Woods's own goal ensured Celtic progressed to the quarter-finals.
"A lot of people seem to think there's a magic wand, you bring players in and everything just clicks into place," said Mowbray.
"But the signs are there. When we're in possession of the ball and going forward then I think this team can be exciting.
"We've still got work to do at the other end of the pitch. We missed Jos Hooiveld today, who has brought some composure to our backline.
"Today we had a young 18-year-old at centre-half and we did try to strengthen that area during the transfer window.
"It didn't quite happen for us but we will get there. I'm sure the people who make the key decisions at this football club can see things developing.Mowbray was delighted with the impact on-loan striker Keane made when he came on at the start of the second half.
"Robbie has genuine class and if you can add class to a hard-working, talented football team and a little bit of magic then it can be the difference," he said.
"Robbie ignited that today; it's his cleverness and movement that creates space for the players to do the damage.
"I'm disappointed with the nature of the goals we conceded but it's about getting through and we managed to do that.
"I understand the hysteria surrounding a defeat but what I try to do is build football clubs from a position of strength.

Yes definitely, but still worried that the team has no composure and no balls really. We seem to miss about 30 chances a game, and Killie and Dunfermline have been passing it through midfield like we weren't there in the last two matches.
There's been so little pressure on them that we've made them look like they're absolute class teams, so there is something seriously wrong there i think.#
But in terms of the changearound of players, it's been a massive improvement, and definitely really pleased with how that is going. Maybe all that's needed is a bit of confidence and some time to settle in terms of line-up and who's doing what - it probably doesn't help that we've bought a whole new team in January while everyone else has had the same players all year.
Also i don''t think he should undermine his players like this in public, whatever their age:

And why bother with this, unless you're feeling a bit insecure:

So maybe when the team has no balls, it doesn't help when the manager makes insecure comments in public about that team. TM needs to grow some! -
Well unless the direction is backwards then were not going in it!

He seems to have brought in better players than let go, so that is a positive but I do question some of his tactical choices. Hopefully we are on the right road now and we have a squad with the talent and fight to go for the title.

He's identified problems & tried to rectify them - that's good.
He's got rid of some poor players & some alright ones, while he's brought in a higher class of player who are younger & probably on less money.
I think it'll come together, but I'm not sure if it'll be in time. -

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who picked up on these things. When dealing with the 'meeja', he should be the one that is the first to stick up for his team. There are a couple of passages in those quotes from Mowbray that hint at, I believe, he has been given notice by the board that he needs to start putting results on the board, that he feels less than secure himself in his position. 'Take it on the chin' has almost become his catch-cry, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has been told that this mantra has to change.

Then why did he start Keane & Kamara last week against Killie? Keane in particular would'nt have gotten to his bed til 2-3am at the earliest the night before, after his arrival and then being asked to start, without a single training session and barely had time to introduce himself to everyone in the dressing room. Surely TM is picking his own teams, yeah? Can't see him allowing a 'Romanov' type figure dictating that certain players must be played.

How does this help? Am sure that there will be times in the future, if notthe immediate future, when this same 18 y.o will be called upon to do a job. TM doesn't seem overly concerned about undermining his players' confidence, as we have seen on a number of occasions this season.

This is a curious statement to make, unless he has been told to pull his socks up. Has someone intimated that they are discontent with the apparent lack of progress, results wise? If TM is trying to demonstrate what progress he sees, why specifically refer this development to the attention of those 'people who make the key decisions', rather than say something along the likes of 'its clear for all to see.' ?

Our form since TM arrived has hardly been one of a 'position of strength'. A loss ratio of nearly 1 in 3 is hardly a position of strength. A position of strength would've been get the results, first and foremost, using the tools he had at his disposal whilst working out who could be part of his longer term plans, and gradually introducing the changes to the style. His method has been more wreaking ball, and less building from a position of strength.
Now, if he could explain some of those odd selections, formations and substitutions... But he is the man in the job. I can only hope his 'vision' is a little closer to reality.
Bottom line is, we are through to the next round of the Cup. Now for the league matters.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 8, 2010 -
Im sure his vision equates to - better players = better football..
With Hooiveld injured , we are no better off than the Mcmanus - Caldwell partnership , by playing Loovens and Thompson together..
The bottom line for me is that our front players will need to score 2 , 3 or more goals in virtually every single game now untill the end of the season if we are going to have any chance of a trophy.. -

I think people are reading too much into his comment with regards to Thompson.
During the Strachan reign, we all wanted transparency from the gaffer, we wanted to know what was going on etc, well, Mowbray has told us just that...we're playing an inexperianced 18 year old at centre half and we DID try to bring that Ramis fella in...so I don't really see why people have a problem with this nor can I see how he is undermining anyones confidence.
I'm sure when Thompson was signed, he was told that his chances in the first time would be limited but he may be called upon if required be it through injury or suspension, so I'm sure there's no doubt in his mind that he knows he isn't an automatic first choice pick when everyones fit.
He hasn't done himself any harm in his stake for claim to be in the starting 11, but he know's that Hooiveld and Loovens will be ahead of him and if Tony could have brought in Ramis, then he too would be. -
Midfield causing all the problems
No real sign of improvement for me. Most of our problems caused by a midfield that is far too lightweight. Kilmarnock game was a case in point. PLG had the same vision and we all know what happened to him. TM.....give us some real dig in the middle of the park and protect the defence!:31::31::31: -
That just proves hes a * manager, he has a better squad and we still cant win games lol -

Do you ever say anything even remotely positive about the club?? -
I agree about the midfield, it seems to get out fought, even yesterday first half. It's sometimes dig that gets you through games in the SPL but I'm not sure if he believes that or he's still looking for his ideal midfielder. If the new strikers are on form and big Jos and Hinkel are back quick it might be enough?

I'm going to disagree with this.
Brown - Definitely not lightweight.
N'Guemo - Same as Brown.
Ki - Not as lightweight as most Asian players, will adapt quickly.
Crosas - Lightweight but if played beside Brown/N'Guemo then we're fine.
Take the Rangers game at parkhead as an example, their CM was players who stamp on people and bully people.
Our Midfield consisted of Crosas and N'Guemo. Who's midfield ran the show? Celtic's.
I think we're going to see N'Guemo and Brown in the middle alot more, this can't be accused of lightweight.
Give me technically gifted over dig anyday, although I don't disagree having one/two ball-winners beside someone who is 'lightweight' in the middle of the park is a good thing. -
Yes fair point...
but shouldn't you handle it completely differently - in a way which shows that you're much more secure about your position in charge of the team, your judgement as a manager, and other peoples' perception of the team.
For instance, when Danny Wilson at Rangers first got in the team, Watty would not have said after a 4-2 win, "we did alright, but you've got to remember that we've got a 17-year-old at centre-back, and i am trying to get someone in to replace him".
Surely it's better for the team as a whole, and the young player in question, to say something along the lines of "JT did excellently today, amazing for his age blah, blah, blah, ... i feel we need to tighten up at the back still though" or something?
Maybe it's not that important, but actually what a manager says in public seems to have a big effect on his players' confidence, and their willingness to play for that manager.
TM seems to get it wrong a lot of the time as he's too concerned about covering his own back, and not concerned enough about covering his players' backs reckon. -
Whats positive about tony mowbrays reign as manager?
Its been a disaster from day 1.
Ill be positive the day the celtic board relieve him of his job. -

I want to know wot basis its on, because its certainly not on results in the league, cup and europe! -
if the vision includes more ras, and less sammy then i like his direction. if he's going to tinker with the line up every week, then his direction is *. wouldn't hurt to give king artur a couple weeks on the bench as well. simple as

I think the fairest thing to do is bring this up in a years time.
It will happen as he now has his own players on the pitch , just a little too late now unfortunately
