Where does Mikey end up if he leaves us?

Assuming he get fitness and injuries under control and plays regularly domestically, does he have a high ceiling that is totally unattainable here as for whatever reason and just pure rotten luck, him being a major star at Celtic is unlikely.

Couldn't care less. It's all about the money we get.

In all honesty I don't think we will get anything for him.

Very good considering he mainly was coming off the bench for 20 mins, the New Zealand game wasn’t. Part of the euro campaign, tbink he may have only had one start in that against gibraltar

Not much if anything but getting him off the wage bill will at least give us some sort of saving.

    He's completely deadwood material.

Well he is under contract for another 2.5 years and is only 24 years old so it will be a 7 figure sum we should be getting for him.

I don't see how we can justify a seven figure fee someone who has done absolutely nothing at club football and his heading towards his 'peak' years.

A professional footballers peak career years typically begin around 28. Mikey Johnston is 24 so he is not at his peak career years yet. He has played 80 times for Celtic winning 3 league titles. He started and won the League Cup Final in 2021. He came on at half time when we won the League Cup Final in 2019. He started in the 2019 Scottish Cup Final when we secured the treble treble. He played in the 2020 Scottish Cup Final coming on as a sub at the end of the 90 minutes and scoring one of the pk's in the shootout. So to claim he has done "absolutely noting at club football" is simply not correct. I would say we given he still has 2.5 years left on his contract and now is also a full Irish international added to all the above make it clear we can very likely get at a 7 figure fee for him.

Not all players hit their peak at the same age (see Alexandre Pato and Lubo). Anyone buying from Celtic want potential. Mikey Johnstone doesn't have much room between him now and his ceiling. He's definitely HEADING TOWARDS HIS 'PEAK'. I put it in caps this time.

He's done absolutely nothing in club football. He's won medals, sure. Did he play his part in those medals? He did in the penalty shoot out, if you're correct. The rest? No more than Paul Caddis did when he was at the club.

Being a full international representing Ireland is the same level as Finland. I'm not belittling those countries players there BTW. They do and will continue to produce the odd very good player. MJ is not one of them. He's only playing for Ireland because he's not good enough to play for Scotland.

I hope he goes for a seven figure fee, but would I be surprised if he doesn't? No.

I wouldn’t be asking, I’d be asking for a high sell on fee. The difference in a fee would be negligible, couple hundred thousand at most. If he goes somewhere, plays a year of solid football and turns it on it’ll earn as more

“Peak” is a weird thing that people have just put an age on, whereas all it means is when a player settles into their best football. Michael Owens peak was 18-23, Ronaldo’s was when he hit his 30’s, went into overdrive.

But even with the generally thought of age for players peak on average, he’s probably 4 years off that at 24. By no means a youngster that age anymore, but not at the ‘peak’ age.

Which is a measurement I find a load of * now tbh, because players seem to be at their best well into their 30’s with modern sports science, whereas by 32 traditionally you’d fall off a cliff fitness wise soon after.

Well I guess we will have to just disagree over what constitutes the peak career years. Although I emphasize I said and say "typically" when talking about peak career years. There are of course exceptions and players who peak at younger or at older ages. For professional footballers though it is typically from about 28 so given Mikey Johnston is 24 he still has room for growth there if he can only stay injury free of course.

He actually has done and accomplished a decent amount considering his injury issues. He has played 80 times for Celtic that is hardly nothing and won 3 league titles along the way. He has started in and won a Scottish Cup and a League Cup. He came on at half time and won another League Cup and came on for the 30 minutes of ET in another Scottish Cup Final as well as scoring one of the penalties that helped us win the quadruple treble. So to describe someone who has started in and played and won 2 cup finals while coming off the bench and winning another 2 with legit time off the bench is hardly a player who to quote yourself "done absolutely nothing in club football".

No question the current Irish team is our worst team from a talent standpoint since the early 1970's. The point about playing international football is not just about how strong your countries team is the point is he has caps from playing against France and the Netherlands recently who last time I checked are pretty good sides so good games and experience for him to play in.

I see no reason whatsoever why given his football CV and his contract situation at Celtic that we cannot get a 7 figure fee for Johnston should we sell him.

Especially since he is a lad who has come through our own academy. For me it's just unfortunately his career has so far been so blighted with injuries. Would love to see him do well with us but if not I wish him nothing but the best.

Harsh, maybe. I honestly won't think of him again once he leaves though.

He's lived the dream we all have. Has done very little with it.
